April 13 City Commission meeting highlights

Mayor’s Report

• Presentations were made in recognition of Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s “Best of Show,” the Biking Works event in Winter Park, and Core Value Coin recipients for January through March 2015.

• Proclamations were given for Arbor Day and Winter Park Public Library National Library Week.

Consent Agenda

• The minutes for March 23, 2015, were approved with an amendment.

• The purchase, contract and formal solicitations were approved (for a complete list, please visit cityofwinterpark.org/ccpackets.)

Action Items Requiring Discussion

• Commissioner Sarah Sprinkel was appointed as Vice Mayor.

• The Shady Park Pavilion was approved to be named after Rev. Mitchell Dawkins Sr.

• The Visioning Steering Committee appointments were approved with an amendment.

• Logan Simpson was approved for city visioning.

Public Hearings

• The following decisions were made on the request of Mr. and Mrs. King for the annexed property at 1802 Stonehurst Road:

— The second reading of the ordinance amending the comprehensive plan future land use map to establish a Single Family Future Land Use designation was approved.

— The second reading of the ordinance amending the official zoning map to establish Single Family Residential (R-1AA) District zoning was approved.

• The following decision was made regarding the request of Morney Partnership Ltd.:

— The second reading of the ordinance vacating and abandoning an unused Florida Power distribution easement located at 326 Hannibal Square East was approved.

Interested in serving on a city board?

The city has a proximately 20 advisory boards that deal with a variety of topics ranging from development, parks, lakes, public art, trees and other city attributes that contribute to our quality of life. These 150-plus residents meet on a regular basis to study and discuss city topics prior to making recommendations for the City Commission to consider when having to make decisions on these important topics.

If you would like to influence decisions, see changes made in specific areas, or simply want to become more involved in your city, please submit a board application. Applications can be found on the city’s official website at cityofwinterpark.org under Government > Boards.

Earth Day in the Park - Sunday, April 19!

The city of Winter Park will proudly host Earth Day in the Park on Sunday, April 19. This fun-filled event, presented by the city of Winter Park’s Sustainability Program and Keep Winter Park Beautiful, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Central Park. Ceremonial events from the main stage will include a mayor’s welcome, Winter Park Green School Grant award presentations, and the Green Workplace Challenge kick-off at 11:30 a.m.

Earth Day in the Park will provide fun for all ages including a kids’ zone with games, face painting, an eco-friendly slime challenge, and tie-dye T-shirts by Rollins College; live music all day long; recycling stations by Goodwill Industries; IDEAS-4-US presenting environment focused films; food and beverage vendors, electric car show, and much more!

In celebration of Arbor Day and in memory of community philanthropist, Kenneth Murrah, the Urban Forestry Division will host a live oak tree planting at 1 p.m. near the Rose Garden. Certified arborists will also be on site to answer questions and give away an assortment of one-gallon containerized trees for city residents to plant at home. Three 15-gallon trees and children’s book “My City Tree Cares for Me” will be raffled with winners being announced at 3 p.m.

Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the earth’s environment. This celebration will showcase how the city of Winter Park and KWPB are working to make the city more sustainable. Attendees will learn how the city is working to implement a Sustainability Action Plan and be asked for their input for the community plan.

To promote creative and sustainable transportation modes, the Pedestrian & Bicycle Advisory Board will host the City of Winter Park Bike Valet. Patrons of the event will be able to check their bike free of charge at Morse Boulevard just east of the railroad tracks.

Household hazardous waste disposal event

The city, in partnership with Waste Pro for household hazardous waste, and A1 Assets Inc. for e-waste, will be offering waste disposal for all city residents Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Compound located at 1409 Howell Branch Road, directly behind Fire Station 64.

Trees for Peace

The city and the Multifaith Education Project are proud to announce the 12th annual Trees for Peace Interfaith Tree Planting Project on Tuesday, April 28, in Martin Luther King Jr. Park located at 1050 W. Morse Blvd. Mayor Steve Leary will begin the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. and the program will be led by Louise Franklin Sheehy, director of the Multifaith Education Project.

Over 85 Christian, Jewish and Muslim students and faculty, representing The Geneva School, Jewish Academy of Orlando, and the Leaders Preparatory School, will join together to plant trees for peace.

This unique tree-planting project represents a continuing effort to encourage children to appreciate diversity while building positive relationships with people of other faiths. The Trees for Peace project is also dedicated to teaching students to be “stewards of the earth” by learning lessons about environmental responsibility from each faith and sharing them with one another.
