A freak loss by Oviedo propelled Winter Park to clinch the Class 8A District 3 title Friday night, as the previously winless in the district Timber Creek Wolves rolled to a 22-21 shocker.

Winter Park had already played all of its district games, holding a 3-1 record as they waited for two games on the same night that could decide the season. Oviedo went into its game against Timber Creek having just upset the undefeated Wildcats the week before. The Lions would watch as Wolves running back Jacques Patrick raced into the record books with 5,000 rushing yards in his career thanks to 211 on the night.

That night Winter Park (8-1) hosted Cypress Creek (1-9) and destroyed them 61-21 in their biggest blowout of the season. The non-district game didn’t affect the postseason, nor will a game against Dr. Phillips, which may turn out to be the Wildcats’ toughest game of the season.

That game kicks off at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at Dr. Phillips. The Panthers are undefeated this season at 9-0, scoring seven touchdowns or more in all but one game so far. They defeated Class 8A District 3 runner up University 51-14 on Sept. 27.

The Eagles needed two upsets in one night to have a shot at the playoffs. They got one. In a season marred by a nine-game losing streak, the Eagles scored their only win of the year in the game that counted the most, beating Class 6A District 10 rival South Lake 33-20.

The win put them at 1-2 in the district, needing a loss by Leesburg to set up a three-way tie in the district. Leesburg didn’t oblige, upsetting previously undefeated-in-district-play Lake Minneola in a 35-7 pummeling. The result is a formerly winless Eagles team won’t make the playoffs, but they do have a win going into their final game of the season, playing at 7:30 p.m. at Boone on Nov. 8. The Braves are 3-6 overall, but playoff bound in their district.
