The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs found a hero in an unlikely place in the lineup in their 3-0 Florida Collegiate Summer League championship win – their eighth man. Batting four positions after cleanup, Mike Melendez knocked in all three of the Dawgs’ runs to beat the Leesburg Lightning 3-0 to grab Winter Park’s second championship in four years.

His RBI single in the bottom of the 6th inning at Tropicana Field and two-run single in the bottom of the 8th were all the Dawgs would need.

Emilio Ogando continued his nearly untouchable season as he threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts before handing it over to the bullpen, which shut down the Lightning. Joshua Glick closed out the save with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.

For the Dawgs, the team’s third championship leaped them over the Lightning for the most in league history.
