Winter Park faces Cypress Creek Friday

Winter Park is preparing for a showdown against Cypress Creek this Friday after taking a week off the gridiron. But will the Wildcats be ready?

The numbers alone are clearly in the Wildcats’ (3-0) favor, as Cypress Creek (0-4) has lost four straight games, all by blowout scores.

The Bears’ most recent game was also their biggest loss so far for 2010, as the Dr. Phillips Panthers decimated the Bears 52-0, triggering the mercy rule clock early in the second half of the game.

History is also on the Wildcats’ side. Last season against a stronger Cypress Creek team, the Wildcats handed them their biggest loss of the season, a 46-0 rout — one of only two times the Bears were shut out in all of 2009.

This season, the Bears offense has struggled even more, giving up two shutouts en route to a combined point spread of 153-13.

It all kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Larry Gergley Stadium in Winter Park.

Edgewater

The Eagles edged St. Cloud 20-17 in a game that came down to the final score.

Edgewater’s defense gave up 171 yards in the air and 125 on the ground in the narrow win, allowing Irving Huggins to collect 72 yards on his own, blasting through the Eagles’ defensive line for four yards per carry.

One the other side of the ball, the Eagles have had trouble collecting scores of their own. Their win against St. Cloud also was their highest-scoring game of the season. In their two wins in the past two weeks, the Eagles have engineered a streak from the slimmest of margins, outscoring their opponents by a combined four points.

Now the Eagles (2-2) will get a week off before facing a Liberty team that’s gone 2-2 on a rollercoaster season. Liberty’s most recent game ended in a 42-19 loss against Harmony.

Lake Howell

The Silver Hawks felt the pain of defeat for the fourth straight game this season, as they fell 42-13 to the Hagerty Huskies.

For Lake Howell, the loss was an improvement on the last two weeks, in which the Silver Hawks lost by a combined 89-0 margin.

Jeff Driskel again grabbed the spotlight, taking the first snap and rushing 70 yards for a touchdown to light up the scoreboard in the first 15 seconds of the game. That was the first of three unanswered Hagerty touchdowns before the Hawks’ Mitchell Dawkins hauled in a pass and went 44 yards for a score. Dawkins would score again in the third quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough for the win.

Lake Howell hosts Liberty at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Huskies will take a week off before kicking off on national television at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at Winter Springs.
