The city of Winter Park and the Public Art Advisory Board have brought back Art on the Green, a prestigious exhibition of large-scale sculptures magnificently displayed in Central Park and on the lawn of City Hall in downtown Winter Park. Art on the Green 2012 will feature the unique and creative works of eight noted sculptors on display during park hours from Sept. 1 to March 1. Exhibition catalogs are available at City Hall and the Winter Park Welcome Center. The collection includes a range of sculptures from elaborate bronze pieces to those fashioned from stainless steel and reclaimed materials. On display at Art on the Green 2012 will be Russell Bellamy’s “St. Prego,” Doug Makemson’s “Ain’t Gonna Work on Maggie’s Farm No More,” Allie Pohl’s “Ideal Woman: Caryatid (Fuchsia),” Dale Rogers’ “Think and Be Free,” Carolina Sardi’s “Three Double Nests,” Chris Scala’s “Airbourne,” Barbara Sorensen’s “Muse I” and Bill Woods “Doorways and Roadways.” A fun, family-friendly opening event celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon, in front of Winter Park City Hall. Enzian Theater presents “The Sleeping Beauty” a Bolshoi ballet at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. A treasured tale of fairies, spells and storybook romance, “The Sleeping Beauty” is the ultimate classical ballet. The Polasek Gardens will host five Tai Chi sessions with instructor Bill Burnette. The sessions will be hosted in the sculpture gardens and are open for beginners and those already practiced in Tai Chi. The Winter Park Institute at Rollins College will host New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Alfond Sports Center, 1000 Holt Ave. He will discuss human rights violations regarding the oppression of women and girls in the developing world. Kristof co-authored the bestselling book “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” with his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, also a New York Times journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner. Join Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a Florida Hospital, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, for the kick-off to “Pink Out Winter Park 2012” by setting a Guinness World Record for the most number of people standing on one leg in one place for two minutes. The Performing Arts of Maitland is sponsoring an evening of dance and community with a live 17-piece Stage Band at the Maitland Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 15. Seed Swap at Leu Gardens is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Orchid Room. The Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club will host a walk in Winter Park on Saturday, Sept. 15. The walk will start at Howell Branch Preserve. Participants can register and start the walk any time between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Each walker will be given a guide with detailed instructions and are welcome to walk with a group, a companion or by themselves. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College is opening “The Mysterious Content of Softness” on Saturday, Sept. 15. The exhibit will display fiber’s connection to the human body and focus on techniques such as knitting, loom weaving and crochet. The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center (ADRC) is hosting its 6th annual fundraising event on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Winter Park Civic Center.
