New exhibit to show WPHS through the years

“Growing Up Wildcat: Winter Park High School Through the Years” will open an interactive experience at the Winter Park Historical Museum on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. The WPHA is looking for the following items to be loaned for the exhibition: memorabilia, photos, videos, yearbooks (donation only) and memories/stories from 1917-present. Rollins College receives honor for tutoring

Rollins College is a recent recipient of an outstanding Partner in Education award from Orange County Public Schools for their Peer Tutoring & Writing program led by Susie Robertshaw. Beginning in September, a handful of student volunteers walked once a week to Winter Park Ninth Grade Center where they spent an hour tutoring the school’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students. OCPS physical education teacher receives honor

Charlotte Day has been named a LifeChanger of the Year under a new program by National Life Group that recognizes outstanding educators, administrators and school district employees who work in K-12 schools across the country. Day is the lead adapted physical education teacher in Orange County’s Hospital Homebound, a program for mentally and physically disabled children who cannot attend traditional schools. “Charlotte is an outstanding and enthusiastic teacher who has had many students, families and peers over the years contact her to tell her the difference she has made in their lives,” her nominator wrote.

Students honored in academics

Andrew Sheppard of Winter Park, a student at Bishop Moore High School, was named the 2012 recipient of the Saint Michael's College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience.

Alexandra Moharam of Winter Park, graduated from Rice University on May 12 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematical economic analysis.

Tiffany McLelland of Winter Park graduated from Elizabethtown College in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology - allied health.

Regina Timmes of Winter Park has been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2012 semester at Salve Regina University.

Jacqueline Gilbert of Winter Park earned a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Liberal Arts of Mercer University during the May commencement for the University's Macon, Ga. campus.

The following students from your area were named to the Dean's List at Mercer University for the spring 2012 semester.

Kathryn Dunnam of Maitland, a senior, was named to the Dean's List of the College of Liberal Arts.

Countdown to Winter Park’s 125th anniversary continues

The 125-day countdown to the city of Winter Park’s 125th anniversary started June 9 and continues until Friday, Oct. 12. For the next 125 days, the city will be posting historical facts on Facebook and Twitter reminding the community about its rich and interesting history. The city has launched a new 125th anniversary button on the home page of its official website, cityofwinterpark.org, highlighting all of the celebrations and events, and providing historical resources and pertinent information associated with this milestone.

In 2002, Jewish Family Services (JFS) established the George Wolly Community Leadership Award to honor those who emulated George’s vision of community, commitment and volunteerism. Self-defense class for women

There will be a SAFE — Self-defense And Familiarization Exchange — class at the Maitland Community Park on Wednesday, July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. The class is limited to women 18 years and older, and to the first 12 women to sign up. Call 407-539-0042.

Goodwill hosts food drive for Second Harvest

During the month of June, all Goodwill retail stores and donation centers in Central Florida will participate in the “Fill the Need” food drive with Second Harvest Food Bank. Donations will support Second Harvest’s “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope” campaign, which helps feed children while school is out during the summer months. Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items along with their Goodwill donations. The drive runs through June 30. To find the nearest retail center, please visit goodwillcfl.org
