A brilliant innovator of the classical guitar, Paul Galbraith will perform the opening concert in the 2012–2013 Bach Festival Visiting Artist Series on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. Galbraith is internationally renowned for his original playing and for helping develop the 8-string guitar, an instrument that enables the playing of a wide variety of classical music transcriptions. The Southern Women’s Show will return to Orlando on Thursday, Oct. 11, through Sunday, Oct. 14. The Southern Women’s Show celebrates its 22nd year featuring shopping, runway shows, cooking and health demonstrations, and a museum quality display that offers a glimpse into the life of Diana, the beloved People’s Princess, highlighting some of her most famous gowns.

The show will be open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults at the door or $8 in advance online; $5 for kids ages 6 through 12; and free with a paying adult for kids six and younger. The Interfaith Council of Central Florida and the Holocaust Memorial Resource will be holding an adult education series on understanding the community’s major religious groups. Islam will be covered Thursday, Oct. 11; Judaism Thursday, Nov. 8; Christianity Tuesday, Dec. 4; Sikhism Tuesday, Jan. 15; Hinduism Tuesday, Feb. 12; Baha’I Tuesday, March 12; Unitarian Universalism Tuesday, Apr. 9. The final session on Tuesday, May 7, will consist of a panel of all of the presenters. Reservations are recommended, but the event is free of charge. “Voter Suppression – Fact or Fiction” will be the topic of The Great Debate Series on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at the University Club of Winter Park. The event costs $5, and is open to the public. Debaters will include Michele Levy, a social worker for 30 years with the state of Florida and First Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Orange County, and John Snow, a Cornell educated attorney. Voter suppression is an important national and statewide issue as the Nov. 6 election approaches. Artistic Director Dario J. Moore will lead an interactive evening of dance and dialogue at The Center for Contemporary Dance in Winter Park from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. Returning from a month-long residency with the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Moore will share insights gained in his creative process and debut evolving new solo works developed over the course of the residency. Loosely structured, the evening is programmed to allow Moore to spontaneously guide attendees from dialogues to dance performances to opt-in creative movement exercises. On Sunday, Oct. 21, the Winter Park Sunday Running Group of the Orlando Runners Club will conduct its annual drive to collect blankets for residents of the Men’s Pavilion at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. The main collection effort will take place in Winter Park at Park Avenue and Welbourne starting at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, prior to the Sunday Running Group’s weekly run starting at 7 a.m. All local runners are invited to join in that run and all people in the community are invited to donate used or new blankets for these homeless men. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art opens its 2012–2013 season in October with two exhibitions that highlight recent acquisitions and another that provides fresh perspective on the glassmaking techniques at Tiffany Studios. One of the most important new additions to the Museum’s collection is Lockwood de Forest’s oil painting “The Wreck,” 1880 — a recent bequest from the estate of de Forest’s great-granddaughter. This large Orientalist desert scene is the subject of a Morse focus exhibition opening Oct. 23. Also on Oct. 23, the Morse will open an informal installation of other recent acquisitions, which include Blue Magnolia and Zephyr Lily pottery from Roseville and a late 19th-century oil painting attributed to James Henry Beard. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center, in partnership with the Wells’Built Museum of African-American History and Culture, will have an Oct. 24 public program on the history of civil rights in Central Florida, with a special focus on Orange County Public School desegregation. Featured speaker will be Rep. Geraldine Thompson, founder of the Wells’Built and a member of Florida’s House of Representatives. The event, open to the public free of charge, will be at the Holocaust Center, 851 N. Maitland Ave. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and the doors will open one hour prior so visitors can view the exhibit, “The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany,” which is on display at the Center through the end of December.

The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens will celebrate Czech Independence Day on Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In recognition of the creation of a free and independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, all visitors to the museum will be admitted free of charge.
