Winter Park’s girls basketball team watched an early season win be avenged by district rival Colonial on Jan. 30, losing 67-52 and losing the district championship in the process.

The Wildcats (23-2) had already earned a berth into the regional playoffs before entering the final game of the district tournament, but faced a Colonial (21-4) team that had just blown out Timber Creek by 20 points the game prior.

The Wildcats watched the Grenadiers go on a scoring tear that blew the game open 28-16 in the first quarter. After that the game settled down, but the Wildcats never got any closer than when they finally started reeling in Colonial in the fourth quarter. By then it was too late. Alexis Pitchford’s 16 points and six rebounds wasn’t enough to catch Colonial.

Winter Park heads to regional play this week, with their runner up slot in the district causing them to have to travel to Vero Beach for the first round. That tips off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5.
