The 42st annual Great Day in the Country Arts & Crafts Festival is produced by the GFWC Oviedo Woman's Club. The Festival, which is free to attendees, is on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Lawton House and Lawton Elementary School in Oviedo, located at 200 W. Broadway St. The tradition of making their famous bean soup mix began in the kitchen of Louise Martin in the 1970s. Louise tried several recipes and finally, after tasting several different combinations of spices, put together what is now their “secret recipe.” In the beginning, the group of ladies that put the packages of soup together was a select group by invitation only. Today at Great Day in the Country they sell 1,800 bags of soup mix, so they put out an “all call” to members and their husbands for help. Bean soup is part of a long tradition at Great Day in the Country. The bags of bean soup will be sold at a stand next to the Country Store by the Lawton House for $3. It is delicious.
