Halloween-themed Get Your Jazz On concert

OCT. 29

The Winter Park Voice and Casa Feliz will host a panel discussion on historic preservation from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Winter Park Community Center, located at 721 W. New England Ave. Moderating the event will be Beth Kassab, award-winning columnist of the Orlando Sentinel. Panelists are among Florida's foremost experts on historic preservation. Come out to the Community Center on Oct. 29 for a lively, informative discussion.

OCT. 30

A Halloween-themed Get Your Jazz On concert will take place at the Alfond Inn courtyard lawn on Oct. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Admission includes the concert, unlimited select wine, champagne, beer, smoked pig, a vegetarian selection and valet parking, with prizes offered for best costume. On Oct. 30, general contractor Frank Roark and project director Christine Madrid French will tell the inside story of the recent save, move (by water) and restoration of the historic Capen-Showalter House in Winter Park. The free public event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at the Winter Park Welcome Center. Drinks and desserts will be offered. The Baroque Chamber Orchestra, Performing Arts of Maitland’s newest musical group, performs at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Maitland Presbyterian Church, located at 341 N. Orlando Ave. Listen to the enchanting sounds of harpsichord and strings under direction of Dr. Alvaro Gomez. The BCO brings Baroque alive and even into the 21st century by playing contemporary compositions in the style of the Baroque. The cost is $10 admission at the door. The Parks & Recreation Department of the city of Winter Park will present the fifth annual Pumpkins & Munchkins in Shady Park on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., adjacent to the Winter Park Community Center at 721 W. New England Ave. Munchkins of all ages are invited to attend this free family-friendly event. Fun-filled activities will include games, a bounce houses, costume contest, Trick-or-Treat Trail and safe Halloween fun for everyone.

Rollins College will celebrate its annual Halloween Howl on Oct. 31 on its Mills Lawn from 2 to 5 p.m. The free family-friendly event offers trick-or-treating, haunted houses, arts and crafts and games. Food and beverages are available for purchase. The haunted houses will be in Rollins residence halls and are created by student organizations. Adult supervision is requested. The Center for Independent Living will hold its annual fundraising walk, Stroll ‘n’ Roll, on Oct. 31 starting at 8 a.m. Hundreds of community members will rally at the event to raise awareness on disability inclusion. Participants will have the chance to use a wheelchair to experience the event in a new way. Money raised from the walk will support programs and services provided for people with disabilities. Registration is $10 in advance and $15 the day of the walk. Children are invited to trick-or-treat from participating merchants on Park Avenue on Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Halloween event is free.

Sonny’s Barbecue is offering a free kid’s meal to those who dress up in their Halloween costumes at the Winter Park and Oviedo locations. The offer will take place on Oct. 31, and is valid with the purchase of an adult entree.

Come enjoy the annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Good Samaritan Society, located at 4250 Village Drive in Kissimmee. The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd will hold a rummage sale on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8 a.m. at 331 Lake Ave. in Maitland. The city’s Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to present Chalk the Walk in Central Park to be held Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is similar to a street-painting festival, but unique in that the sidewalks of beautiful Central Park will become the canvas on which artists create their magnificent works of chalk art. The event is open to spectators all day. Prizes for the show totaling $2,500 will be presented to winners from adult, high school and middle school categories. Winners will be announced from the main stage in Central Park at 5 p.m. Event participation and chalk are free and open to the public. However, space is limited and requires application in advance for all categories via email at [email protected].

The 42st annual Great Day in the Country Arts & Crafts Festival is produced by the GFWC Oviedo Woman's Club, which was founded in 1906. Over the last decade the club has raised over $600,000 to promote the arts and to fund scholarships, community organizations, charities and projects. Last year they awarded over $80,000 from Great Day in the Country. Local schools received $16,000 for unfunded programs; $45,000 in grants was awarded to organizations who help women, families, children and senior citizens; and $18,000 in scholarships was awarded to graduating boys and girls from the local high schools as well as women returning to school. The festival, which is free to attendees, is on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Lawton House and Lawton Elementary School in Oviedo, located at 200 W.
