Maitland non-profit to be featured on LYNX bus

Franklin’s Friends of Maitland is one of 15 non-profit agencies to be featured on the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (LYNX) 2016-17 Public Service Bus. All organizations will receive free exposure by having their logos placed on a LYNX bus traveling Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties for the next 12 months. Orange County Mayor and LYNX Chair Teresa Jacobs and LYNX Interim Chief Executive Officer/General Manager Susan Black will unveil the bus 9 a.m. April 20 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Franklin’s Friends of Maitland supports Central Florida animal welfare by fundraising for local nonprofit and government agencies that are dedicated to shelter/rescue, spay/neuter or community education programs.

Local high schools earn Academic Team Champion award

Six Orange County high schools have been awarded for academic achievement by the Florida High School Athletic Association. The FHSAA Academic Team Champion recognition program honors teamwork not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. Six high schools were among the top ten in the state. The schools that received the Academic Team Champion Award are: Boone, Winter Park, University, Olympia, Dr. Phillips and Lake Nona. The fall and winter sports teams contributing to the Academic Team Champion Award include: football, cross country, swimming and diving, girls volleyball, bowling, basketball, competitive cheer, soccer, girls weightlifting and wrestling. Teams earned points based on where a school placed in athletic rankings and their cumulative team grade point average.
