The Tars had a wild few games in the past week, stomping Ave Maria by a 18-5 score on Thursday, then turning around and losing to Florida Southern (25-9, 8-4) by a score of 10-1. Then the Tars (22-15, 7-8) found their bats and won the next two games 5-3 and 9-2 to take the series.

In their slugfest win over the Gyrenes (14-30), spread out over the course of five different rallies, seven Rollins hitters batted in at least a run, with backup right fielder Skip Kovar tallying four RBI. Kovar’s bases-clearing triple in the second inning knocked in the winning runs. Then the Tars tacked on 12 more runs in their biggest show of force all season.

The euphoria was short-lived, however, with the Tars letting a 2-1 game against Florida Southern get out of hand in the seventh inning Friday. The Mocs went on a seven-run tear that put the game out of reach for the Tars, who only had a single hit, again by Kovar. Florida Southern’s Ben Richardson pitched eight innings of one-hit ball.

The Tars travel for a three-game series against Nova Southeastern (25-11, 11-4) this weekend, starting at 6 p.m. Friday in Ft. Lauderdale, then a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

UCF

The Knights limped out of Houston on Sunday with two narrow losses after opening the series with a one-run win.

The 2-1 win and 4-3 and 1-0 losses to the Cougars (19-12, 3-3) were a stark contrast to how the Knights ended March, with a 16-0 battering of Cornell. In their loss on Sunday to finish out the series in Houston, the Knights stranded five runners, giving starter Juan Pimentel little help as he dominated the Cougars’ hitters, giving up only a home run that would mark the winning score. Pimentel (2-5) struck out seven and allowed just six hits. Houston’s starting hurler, Mitch Ullom, also went the distance.

That lost series gave the Knights an even record in American Athletic Conference games so far this season, with the Knights now 18-16 overall and 3-3 in the AAC.

The Knights traveled to Miami on Wednesday at press time to face the Hurricanes (25-4). This weekend they host USF (16-16, 2-4), with their first game at 6:30 p.m. Friday, then at noon Saturday, then at 1 p.m. Sunday. The last time the Knights played the Bulls, they lost two of three, ending the regular season on a two-game losing streak.

Winter Park

The Wildcats jumped to 18-4 overall and 8-0 in the district after trouncing three straight teams as part of a seven-game winning streak. They smashed Oak Ridge 11-0 last Tuesday, then Manatee 10-3 on Thursday, then Seminole 8-0 on Friday.

Against Oak Ridge, five Wildcats hit doubles, tallying 11 runs in the first three innings of the game. Matt Garcia came into the game late and batted in three runners to lead the team.

In the Manatee game Winter Park’s starting pitcher, Jaison Heard, struck out five in six innings of the seven-inning game, and blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence.

In their 8-0 bamboozling of Seminole, the Wildcats’ Freddy Torres blasted a home run and a sacrifice fly to tally a team-leading three RBI. David Bulmer struck out eight batters in six innings of work in the game.

The Wildcats will finish off the regular season with a road game at Lake Brantley at 7 p.m. tonight. Then it’s district tournament time, with Winter Park a lock for the top seed. The tournament, hosted by Timber Creek High School, starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Edgewater

The Eagles are 11-11 overall and 8-4 in the district after losing 8-7 to Seabreeze (9-12) on Friday. That loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Edgewater. The win was snatched away from the Eagles when Seabreeze scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake them. Of the Eagles’ 11 hits on the night, none were for extra bases. Thirteen runners were left on base.

With the regular season over by press time, the Eagles were locked into third place on the Class 7A District 5 ladder, two games behind New Smyrna Beach and four games behind district leader Deltona. The district tournament starts Monday at Mainland.
