Public Hearings

• First reading of the ordinance amending Chapter 50, “Fire Prevention and Protection.”

Denning Drive walking tour and public meeting

The city of Winter Park, with assistance from GAI Consultants Inc., will hold two public involvement meetings to discuss Denning Drive, its current conditions, and future possibilities. The first meeting, will be in a workshop format and held Thursday, May 12. The follow-up meeting, will be held Tuesday, June 7. Both meetings will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center located at 1050 W. Morse Blvd., and public input is encouraged.

On Thursday, May 12, the meeting will involve a “walking audit” of Denning Drive giving attendees the opportunity to experience Denning from a walker’s point of view, including bike activity along the corridor as well as bus and vehicular movements along the road. After the walking tour, the participants will discuss the corridor’s capacity to accommodate all of these modes of transportation. Special attention will be given to the relationship between residential properties and businesses along the corridor.

At the second meeting, Tuesday, June 7, staff will summarize the May meeting discussions as well as present sketches and concepts based on the feedback from the first workshop. Attendees at this meeting will have the opportunity to discuss, and provide input and suggestions on the information presented.

Improvements to Showalter Field

The city of Winter Park has negotiated a Showalter Field use agreement with the Orange County Public School Board. The new use agreement will allow the city to implement improvements to the facility, including a running track and synthetic athletic field, as well as supplement facility maintenance costs with rental payments from Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), Rollins College and additional tenants.

“This new agreement between the city of Winter Park and OCPS is another example of how regional partners can, and should, work together for the benefit of our community. I want to thank Vice Mayor Sarah Sprinkel for her efforts on this project, and a special thank you to Orange County School Board Chairman Bill Sublette, whose direct involvement got us across the goal line. This agreement will benefit students and families of Winter Park High School for decades,” said Mayor Steve Leary.

"We are excited to continue our special relationship with the city of Winter Park. I especially want to thank Mayor Leary and the City Commission for working with us as partners in our effort to improve Showalter Field and maintain it as one of the premier athletic facilities in the county," shared Orange County School Board Chairman Bill Sublette.

Since 1993, the city has leased Showalter Field to OCPS for $1 per year, giving OCPS exclusive use of the facility for Winter Park High School events and other school-sanctioned activities. In return, OCPS has been responsible for management and maintenance of the field, facilities and infrastructure.

The new use agreement will shift maintenance responsibilities from OCPS to the city, allowing Winter Park to lease the field to OCPS for $80,000 annually, as well as additional tenants throughout the year to create lease revenues. Soon-to-begin facility improvements aforementioned will be funded through cost sharing between the city, Rollins College and Winter Park High School Foundation.

U.S. Highway 17-92 road closure

U.S. Highway 17-92 will be closed to traffic between Winter Park and Maitland between 12:01 and 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 7 while SunRail workers lay new tracks across the 17-92 bridge. The road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of motorists while work is done to improve the track and provide a smoother ride for SunRail passengers. Detour route signage will be placed at key locations along U.S. Highway 17-92 advising motorists of how to drive around the work zone.

Detour Information:

• Traffic traveling southbound along U.S. Highway 17-92 should make a right turn onto Maitland Boulevard, take the I-4 westbound ramp onto I-4 westbound, exit at Exit 88 for State Road 423 (Lee Road), take a left onto Lee Road and make a right turn onto southbound U.S. Highway 17-92.

• Traffic traveling northbound along U.S. Highway 17-92 will make a left turn onto Lee Road, take the I-4 eastbound ramp onto I-4 eastbound, exit at Exit 90 onto Maitland Boulevard, and make a right turn onto northbound U.S. 17-92.
