Moore makes dean’s list

Jessica Moore, a sophomore from Winter Park studying fashion merchandising within the College of the Arts at Kent State University, was named to the fall 2016 dean's list. Moore is among more than 8,700 undergraduate students who have earned and received this recent academic recognition. To qualify for this honor, undergraduate students must obtain a 3.4 GPA or higher while maintaining 12 or more credit hours in a semester. Part time undergraduate students must obtain a 3.4 or higher GPA while maintaining 12 or more credit hours over the course of the fall, spring, and summer sessions. Kent State University is Northeast Ohio's leading public research university with more than 41,000 students.

Superintendent chosen for Florida Council of 100

Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Jenkins has been selected to serve as a member of the Florida Council of 100, a state organization that was formed in 1961. She will work with high level civic leaders from around the state to effect positive change in the state and achieve quality of life improvements for the citizens of Florida. Dr. Jenkins has been the superintendent since 2012. She serves on the executive board of directors of the Council of Great City Schools, is a member of Chiefs for Change, a national education policy and advocacy transformation group, and is past president of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents. She was recently selected as a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year after being named the 2017 Florida Superintendent of the Year.

EPA awards OCPS with funding, new buses

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded more than $7.7 million to replace or retrofit 401 older diesel school buses. The funds are going to 88 school bus fleets in 27 states, each of which will receive rebates through EPA's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act funding. The new and retrofitted buses will reduce pollutants that are linked to health problems such as asthma and lung damage. Orange County Public Schools received $240,000 in funding and 20 new buses.

University names Winter Parkers to dean’s list

Bucknell University has released the dean's list for outstanding academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2016-17 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean's list recognition. The list included Winter Park residents Beatrice Giordano, class of 2019, and Maria Prothero, class of 2018. Located in Lewisburg, Pa., Bucknell University is a highly selective private liberal arts university that offers majors in the arts, engineering, humanities, management, and social and natural sciences, along with broad opportunities outside of class, to its 3,600 undergraduates.

Maitland, Orlando and Winter Park students recognized

Furman University’s fall 2016 dean's list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher on a four-point system. The list included Maitland resident Emma Browder; Orlando residents Olivia Corso, Helen Hardy and Evan Jager; and Winter Park residents John Mitchell and Allison Powell. Furman is a private, undergraduate liberal arts university of 2,700 students in Greenville, S.C.

Oliveria named to Wisconsin-Madison dean’s list

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has recognized students named to the dean's list for the fall semester of the 2016-2017 academic year, including Winter Park resident Layton Oliveria. Students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the dean's list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.
