Rollins basketball team seeks to salvage record

Rollins men’s basketball

The Rollins Tars spent Saturday night digging out of their Sunshine State Conference hole, beating Saint Leo 77-72.

The Tars, who hadn’t strung together back-to-back wins since a week before Christmas, grabbed the lead midway through the first period and stretched it as wide as 14 points before nearly being reeled in by the end. Connor Mckim’s 15 points led the way for the Tars, with Joey Galvis not far behind with 14.

That win jumped them up to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the SSC. After facing Lynn at press time Wednesday, they’ll host Florida Tech (11-6, 4-4) at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Alfond Sports Center. Then it’s off to Florida Southern (7-10, 5-4) in Lakeland next Wednesday.

Rollins women’s basketball

The Rollins women are at 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference after taking down Saint Leo 71-47 Saturday thanks to 16 points from Julia Ingler. Rollins didn’t score from the floor for the first 6 minutes of the game before Ingler dropped a three-pointer into the basket, then the Tars were off to the races.

The win continued an up and down January for Rollins, which hosted Lynn at press time Wednesday, and will host Florida Tech (8-7, 3-5) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Winter Park boys’ basketball

The Wildcats rebounded to 8-10 on the season and 2-3 in district play with an 84-66 win over Freedom on Tuesday night. Wyatt Wilkes rained down the scores with 19 points, three baskets from downtown, 11 assists and coming up just a pair of rebounds shy of a triple double. Kevin Buckley chipped in with 15 points of his own, grabbing six boards in the process.

At 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, the Wildcats host the Cypress Creek Bears (10-6, 2-2). Friday they travel to Oak Ridge.

Winter Park girls’ basketball

After winning five straight the Wildcats have now dropped two in a row in the last week. They lost 55-45 to Spruce Creek on Jan. 11, then two days later dropped a heartbreaker at Boone, 42-41.

At 7:30 p.m. tonight the Wildcats travel to Dr. Phillips (4-13, 1-1) with the hopes of righting their record. They’ll be back at home again at 6 p.m. next Tuesday.

Edgewater boys’ basketball

With an 82-71 win over Lake Gibson Tuesday night, the Eagles leapt up to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the district, putting them ahead of Auburndale and tops in district play.

That’s just who the Eagles play next, on the road in Auburndale this week. They return home to host Boone in their annual rivalry game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Edgewater girls’ basketball

The lady Eagles are 11-13 overall but undefeated in district play as they enter their final weekend of the regular season. They fell 64-20 to Wekiva last week. They’ll host Boone at 11 a.m. Saturday to finish things off.
