Maitland resident makes dean’s list

Heather Johnson of Maitland was recently named to the Columbia College dean's list for the fall semester (August-December 2016). To be named to the dean's list, a student must have completed 12 semester hours in a 16-week period and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0-point scale. Founded in 1851 in Columbia, Mo., Columbia College has been helping students advance their lives through higher education for more than 165 years. As a private, nonprofit, liberal arts and sciences institution, the college takes pride in its small classes, experienced faculty and quality educational programs. With more than 30 locations across the country, students may enroll in day, evening or online classes. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Local university honored at event

Herzing University was honored for its commitment to business and social responsibility with the Corporate Recognition Award during the Eagle Awards, the signature event of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, on Jan. 14. In 2016, Herzing University extended more than 25 MBA scholarships to members of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida who are entrepreneurs. To date, 14 scholarships valued at more than $389,000 have been awarded. Additionally, Herzing hires diverse faculty and staff; provides mentoring and coaching for minority students at no cost; facilitates employee development through a partnership with Vantage Point Coaching; partners with Wyche & Associates, a local black-owned public relations firm; and supports the African American Chamber as a founding trustee.

Winter Parker makes dean’s list

Eric Stewart Simmons of Winter Park was recently named to the dean's list at the College of William & Mary for the fall 2016 semester. In order to achieve dean's list status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 Quality Point Average during the semester. William & Mary is the second oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

Baylor names local students to dean’s list

More than 3,900 Baylor University students were named to the dean's academic honor roll for the 2016 fall semester, including Hamilton K. Bright of Maitland and Stephen Jack Reiman of Winter Park. To be named to the dean's list, a student must be an undergraduate with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7, while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours. Baylor University is a private Christian university and a nationally ranked research institution. The University provides a vibrant campus community for more than 16,000 students by blending interdisciplinary research with an international reputation for educational excellence and a faculty commitment to teaching and scholarship.

Trinity Prep advances in debate competition

Students from Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park have advanced to the “Top 32” round of the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). Sponsored by the Brewer Foundation and New York University, the IPPF is the first and only debate competition that gives high school students around the world the opportunity to engage in written and oral debates on issues of public policy. By advancing, the students remain eligible to win a $10,000 grand prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to the IPPF Finals in New York City on May 6. Trinity Preparatory School is the only team from Florida to advance this round.

Samford University releases dean’s list

Samford University releases dean's lists after the close of the fall and spring semesters each academic year. To qualify for the dean's list, a student must have earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average out of a possible 4.0 while attempting at least 12 credit hours of coursework. The dean's list is the highest academic recognition given by the school at the end of each semester. The following local students qualified for Samford's fall 2016 dean's list: Shae C. Corey of Orlando, Bethany J. Eubanks of Winter Park, Trina M. Leary of Winter Park, Katherine A. Lower of Winter Park, Alyson V. McDonald of Orlando, and Madison R. Zizmer of Orlando.

University accepts Maitland resident

University of the Cumberlands has proudly accepted Raegan Granville of Maitland for the upcoming academic year. UC welcomes Raegan, a current student at Winter Park High School, to the class of 2021. Home of the Patriots, University of the Cumberlands offers promising students of all backgrounds a first class education grounded in the liberal arts within a Christian context. Located in Williamsburg, Ky., UC offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, including many online programs.
