The Windermere Police Department is hosting a DEA National Drug Takeback program at its location, 620 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Residents are being asked to collect their unused prescription drugs and take them to the police department for the proper disposal.

This saves lives and protects the environment, police say. Unused or expired prescription medication can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse.

The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends – and the home medicine cabinet, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Those that are flushed contaminate the water supply.

Although the event is Saturday, the Windermere Police Department has a permanent drug prescription container in the lobby.
