AUG. 23

DRAMATIC DIABETIC

16000 block of West Colonial Drive. Drunken driving. An officer received a call at 6:47 p.m. about a drunken driver at a gas station from the driver’s daughter. The driver nearly hit the curb as she exited the lot. Swerving prompted a traffic stop. The driver said she was not drunken, just tired and diabetic, despite alcohol odors on her breath. She said her blood sugar was fine and she “just wanted to go back to (her) vehicle, eat some doughnuts and go home.” The officer asked her to do sobriety exercises. She asked why and became agitated, saying she disliked the idea. When asked again, she said yes. She listed medication she could not afford and a hip she injured in 1988 as medical conditions before saying she had bread and butter a while ago “but that is why I bought the doughnuts.” During the eye test, she kept moving her head, yelling, “You are hurting me!” When asked how, she said, “The fat between my legs is hurting when I stand this way.” The officer demonstrated a comfortable stance. She kept interrupteing walk-and-turn instructions, starting five times and yelling, “God — why are you hurting me? Just let me go home.” She said her hip would prevent her from a one-leg stand. When asked whether she could stand on the other leg, she said she did not know because she just wanted to go home. She raised her good leg but immediately put it down. The officer asked why she stood on her hurt leg. She shouted, “I know my own body!” She lifted the good leg for 11 seconds but then put down her foot and began arguing with the officer. She was about to vomit and had low blood sugar, she said. When EMTs arrived, she angrily shouted she wanted an ambulance, not fire rescue. She threw herself on the ground and cried, saying EMTs hurt her, although no official touched her. She said, “You just want to test my blood. Take me to the hospital. I want the doctors to test my blood.” She screamed for medical attention before officers arrested her on DUI charges and took her to a hospital. On her hospital bed, she just kept saying, “You’re a liar,” for minutes, before the officer declared refusal and she fell asleep.
