These are the top entries to the Observer first Halloween costume photo contest. The winning photo, submitted by Clyde Moore, was published in the newspaper and Clyde received Regal movie tickets.
Fans packed the stands at Showalter Field on Monday, Oct. 24, for the Rollins College Football Club’s first game, which they lost 48-17 to Webber International.
Rollins professor Richard Owens performed in his 80th birthday recital and fundraiser on Oct. 15. “For the Love of Singing” raised close to $10,000 for the Music Theater Bavaria scholarship fund. The lakeside reception was sponsored by The Voice Care Center of the Ear, Nose, Throat & Plastic Surgery Associates, and by The Mayflower.
Cows ‘n Cabs, benefiting Collation for the Homeless, Community Food and Outreach Center, and Winter Park Y Scholarship Fund, featured a hula hoop contest, wine tastings and auctions on Oct. 22.

Gov. Rick Scott spent his second Let’s Get to Work Day at Audubon Park Elementary School in Orlando on Friday. Scott helped prepare and serve breakfast to more than 100 students. First Lady Ann Scott visited a technology focused third-grade classroom that utilizes laptops for learning instead of pencils and papers. Earlier in the day, she visited Orlando Day Nursery and the Orlando Public Library. “I learned so much from the young students at Audubon Park Elementary School today. Third-grade students taught me how learning online can be fun and paperless and second graders impressed me with their reading,” Mrs. Scott said.
Bach Festival Society hosted Summer Sing, which gave community members the opportunity to participate in the creation of the music at Rollins College on Aug. 7.
Trinity Prep, the Walt Disney World branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs and seven other area high schools presented the Broadway musical “Hairspray” on Aug. 7. They'll have additional shows at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19-20; and 2:30 p.m. Aug. 21. It’s at 5700 Trinity Prep Lane, Winter Park. Tickets are $10.
