Legacy High School’s 45 graduating seniors collected their hard-earned high school diplomas during their commencement ceremony held Saturday, May 25.
The school's packed gym heard speeches from the school's principal Roberta VanHouten and Legacy High School CEO Crystal Yoakum. Michael Harris, a Legacy High alum, gave the graduation address.
Principal VanHouten presented Nathan Benedict with the Eagle Award, which is bestowed on the senior who the school's staff and teachers feel best exemplifies Legacy High School's values and standards. Vanhouten added that the school unanimously voted to select Benedict as the recipient for the award this year.
The class salutatorian, Christian Middleton, thanked the school's teachers for their guidance and care in his speech, and class valedictorian Abigail Dannels offered her fellow seniors some sage words of advice.
“The teachers and staff here really care about our success," Middleton said during his speech. "I have been here since first grade and I have always felt like my teachers were there to support me. Legacy has always given us many great opportunities, from extracurricular activities, sports, to honors, AP and dual-enrollment courses. these fantastic people and opportunities have gotten us where we are right now – graduating from high school and fully prepared for the world. I hope the world is prepared for us.”
“Now, Class of 2019, I just want you to know that while I was googling how to write a valedictorian speech and what to include in my speech because I had no idea what to say, the common advice I saw was to impart some wisdom,” Dannels said. “So I decided to leave you with five pieces of advice. One, know the difference between joy and happiness ... two, work smarter, not harder; three, do not waste your college years away ... four, always use Rate My Professors when choosing a teacher in college – it’s the most effective way to choose an easy class and an easy professor. ... One thing is for sure: Legacy will always be a part of us – the good, the bad and the annoying. So, to the Class of 2019, good luck.”
