United Arts raises $1.5 million

United Arts raises $1.5 million

United Arts of Central Florida announced that it has received pledges totaling 95 percent ($1.50 million) of its $1.57 million collaborative fundraising campaign goal. Donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and workplace giving campaigns during the three-month campaign provide funding for a range of nonprofit arts, sciences and history organizations in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties.

Dinner on the Avenue winners

More than 1,200 patrons dined on Park Avenue at the city of Winter Park’s 12th annual Dinner on the Avenue on April 20. Matt Austin and Troy Bridges of WKMG Local 6 served as celebrity judges to help decide winners in each of the following categories. Most Colorful: Fran Haynes table, “Glee!”; and Mary Lane table, “Lilly Pulitzer.” Most Elegant: Ann Higbie table, “The 1940s”; and Stacey Votey table, “Fire and Ice.” Most Original: Susan Woodburn table, “Roller Girlz”; and Jan Massey table, “Carnival Cruise.” Best TV/Movie Theme: Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens table, “Harry Potter”; and Virginia Heights table, “Downton Abbey.” Honorable Mention: Sunny Wilmot table, “Winter Park Pizza Kitchen”; and Redmon Design table, “Red Solo Cup.”

Winter Park’s presidential scholar

Helena Berbano of Winter Park was recently recognized as a Presidential Scholar at the annual Honors Convocation held at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. The Presidential Scholar designation is awarded to those graduating students who have achieved a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, based on a 4.0 grading system.

Mayflower spreads Goodwill

Residents at The Mayflower Retirement Community recently collected 325 pounds of items during a donation drive to benefit Goodwill Industries of Central Florida. During the drive, about 20 residents contributed items – including lamps, pictures, silk floral arrangements, kitchen items, golf clubs and clothes.

9 seniors named National Achievement Scholarship winners

Orange County Public Schools has nine seniors named 2013 National Achievement Scholarship winners. Each student will receive $2,500. Winter Park High School student,

Alicia Tarver, was among the recipients. The students are among 700 outstanding black American high school seniors nationwide who have won this scholarship through the National Achievement Scholarship Program. The program is financed by grants from 29 corporate organizations and professional associations and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

American Cancer Society needs study participants

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is seeking participants between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, for its Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Interested Orlando locals can register at the following locations on the corresponding dates: Hannover Re on May 14, 2013 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Leesburg Regional Medical Center on July 16, 2013 between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Villages Regional Hospital on July 17, 2013 between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.; American Cancer Society on July 18, 2013 between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Central Florida Regional Hospital on July 20, 2013 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.; Osceola Regional Medical Center on July 20, 2013 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
