Lt. Col. Doug Canning of Maitland was featured in this past weekend’s Legends & Legacies Symposium “Pacific War: Power and Pursuit” at Fantasy of Flight. He was handpicked for a mission to take down the No. 1 top military strategist of the Japanese Imperial forces, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. He is the only person still living who took part in the mission.

On Monday, June 6, Full Sail University (fullsail.edu) was proud to be the host location for the taping of ESPN’s College GameDay intro for the upcoming 2011 college football season. The event consisted of a live video shoot to support ESPN College GameDay’s opening sequence featuring Big & Rich.

The Orange County Regional History Center recently accepted the Rachel D. Murrah Citrus Label Collection as the newest addition to its archives. Kenneth Murrah donated the collection of more than 900 citrus labels, including rare vegetable labels, in honor of his late wife, Rachel D. Murrah, who collected them for nearly two decades. Winter Park High School art teacher Melissa Pranke is one of the first recipients to receive a summer residency through the new State Teacher/Artist Residencies program. Ms. Pranke along with four other teachers from across the state will be staying at The Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood for four weeks between July and August. Ms. Pranke is a visual artist and writer. All of the teachers will have the opportunity to pursue their own personal artistic work.

Kelly A. Rudolph of Winter Park graduated with a degree in Psychology at the 118th Commencement Exercises at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday, May 21.

The official application from the state is now available for deployed service members to apply for the additional property tax exemption signed into law on May 31 by the governor of Florida. The deadline to file for this exemption is June 1, but due to the late implementation of the law, the Orange County Property Appraiser will be accepting applications that are filed after this date. Donegan has set up a form on his website, ocpafl.org, where service members can apply.

Maitland Middle School students Courtney Larson, Miriam Scheinblum, Laurel Stride and Robert Van Valkenburgh were awarded third place in the Future Problem Solving Program International Global Issues Team Problem Solving Competition held in La Crosse, Wis. In a separate competition in which he joined with students from other states and countries, team alternate Colin McCracken also won a third place trophy.

Effective July 1, Orange County Health Department will no longer have a Vital Statistics office at the Apopka Health Center or at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. Vital statistics offices will remain open at the following three Orange County Health Department locations:

Central Health Center at 807 W. Church St.

Orlando Health Campus at 44 Lake Beauty Drive, 4th Floor

Clarcona Ocoee driver license office at 4101 Clarcona-Ocoee Road

Ways to give back

Beginning June 1 and continuing through July 31, JFS will conduct a Got Lunch campaign. Your gift to the Got Lunch program will help give children the energy they need to play and grow healthy this summer. An $18 donation, for instance, will help feed a child for three days and $36 can feed a child for nearly a week. Donations can be made payable to JFS and mailed to their office at 2100 Lee Road, Winter Park, FL 32789 (please note “Got Lunch” on your check). Palmano’s Café, Coffee and Wine Bar, 333 S. Park Ave., announced that throughout the summer, 50 percent of their bottled water proceeds will benefit The Morning Star School.

Seniors First Inc. recently launched Help Fuel Meals On Wheels, a campaign to offset the cost of gas for the volunteer Meals On Wheels drivers. Seniors First, which provides meals to Orange County senior citizens, is asking for both monetary and $10 gas card donations to reimburse volunteer drivers. The campaign runs through June 30. The Center for Cultural Interchange needs volunteer host families from July 5-July 26 for exchange students from Spain. The students are between 14 and 18 years old.
