DR. PHILLIPS The Dr. Phillips volleyball team is 6-1 so far this fall and has won four consecutive games with senior newcomer Maredis Colon playing a big role in the Panthers’ success. Colon, who moved to the area from Puerto Rico over the summer, has racked up 67 kills and 51 digs through Dr. Phillips first seven games — including a team-high 17 kills in the Panthers’ big win Sept. 15 against district rival Olympia.

More than just statistically, though, head coach Danny Eleutiza said his newcomer from Puerto Rico has made a big impact on his program.

“She’s a leader,” Eleutiza said. “She’s a fighter. She’s very coachable and has a lot of heart.”

Q-AND-A

Why did you come to Central Florida?

Ever since I was little, I wanted to come here and study and go to college.

How do you like playing volleyball here in Central Florida?

It’s pretty good. Volleyball here is really different from Puerto Rico — they play really good volleyball here.

How have your new teammates been in terms of welcoming you in?

They were really friendly. I knew some of the girls from during the summer because they did open gyms.

What is it like playing for coach Danny Eleutiza?

He’s a really good coach. He is really pushing me to my limits and I thank him for that.

Which game that the Panthers have won so far has been the most memorable for you?

This one — (Sept. 15) versus Olympia. The big crowd was the main thing and our energy on the court was super good.

What do you think the outlook is for your team?

This team is really good and I believe we can go really far.

What has been the hardest adjustment of moving to Central Florida from Puerto Rico?

Learning English (and) when I’m trying to speak and have a conversation. That is kind of the hardest part.

What is your dream job or career field?

My first option is architecture and my second is to be a doctor or something like that.
