Sports Spotlight - Windermere Observer: Caroline Hwang

Caroline Hwang is not your average freshman golfer. While the accomplishment of Hwang, 14, making it to state as an individual in her debut varsity season is impressive, it is also not very surprising considering some of her other recent achievements. Hwang qualified for — and competed in — the USGA’s U.S. Girls’ Junior in Missouri in July, facing off against the best junior golfers in the nation. She ended her freshman season for the Titans this past Saturday at the FHSAA High School Golf Championships at Mission Inn, finishing in 12th place in Class 3A as an individual.

How do you think you did at state?

I didn’t play that well at states. Putting, I had the right speed, but the line was a little bit off, so everything (was ending up) right next to the hole — it just didn’t go in.

What do you recall about the regional tournament, at Orange Tree Golf Club, where you qualified for state?

I’m proud to have made it to state, but I didn’t play my best there — I had so many birdie chances, and nothing would go in. I could have finished five shots better.

Which area of your game is the strongest — and what is something you’re working at?

Driving, I hit it further than other girls, and my irons are accurate. Putting, I’m good at, I just need speed control, maybe, or just those little touches where I need to aim (better).

What did you enjoy the most about your first varsity season?

Playing with my teammates and getting to know them. Once I know them, we’re more close and it’s more fun.

What was the highlight of your freshman season?

When I shot a (six-under) 66 (at the Metro West Conference Championship at Forest Lake). Everything was just going in. I didn’t have any boogies, no three-putts — just six birdies.

What was your experience like playing at the USGA U.S. Girls’ Junior?

I did pretty well, but not good enough to make the cut. It was really fun over there, so I’m going to try and make it again this year.

What is your favorite course here in Florida to play and then what is a course you have always wanted to play?

I like the new course at Grand Cypress and then I like Eagle Creek, which is near Lake Nona High School. I want to play at Pebble Beach.

Who is a professional golfer who you look up to?

Well, Lexi Thompson, she’s really long (off the tees) like me. … I also like Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. 

How young were you when you got started in golf and what sparked the interest?

I started when I was 3, and my parents just gave us plastic club and we were really good at it. We started competing at like (age) 7 until now.

What are your favorite subjects in school?

I like French and chemistry and then English. We’re learning about the periodic table in chemistry and that’s pretty interesting.

Do you have other hobbies outside of golf?

I play the piano and violin. I know how to play “Fur Elise” on the piano and then for the violin I know conciertos and stuff.
