The point guard for the Windermere Prep boys basketball team, sophomore Zavien Williams has been helping the Lakers’ varsity squad since he was just an eighth-grader. When he’s not leading the Lakers out on the hardwood, you’ll find Williams playing NBA 2K or watching some Marvel superhero movies with his brothers.

What inspired you to play basketball?

I was 8 years old when I started playing basketball. My dad introduced me to basketball, because he used to play all the time. I use to travel with him and watch his games, and I loved it.

What is your favorite thing about basketball?

I would have to say scoring. It feels good to score, because not only are you making it yourself out there and letting people notice you, but you’re also helping your teammates.

What is the most difficult thing about playing your sport?

Excelling while the pressure is on you. It’s hard when there is a lot of pressure on you.

What has been the biggest highlight moment for you playing basketball?

When I joined the varsity team in eighth grade, in the district finals and I got my first two points on varsity. I was so happy at that moment. I was like, “I did it! I got two points, and now it’s time to grind.”

What has been your favorite thing about playing basketball at Windermere Prep?

It’s the team chemistry — it’s always good. We all love each other, and the bonding is great. We have a few arguments here and there, but it’s OK though, because we are all brothers and we fight for each other.

When you’re not playing basketball, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy playing (NBA) 2K, I enjoy watching Netflix with my brothers.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would go to Africa, because there’s great monuments there that have been around a long time.

What is your go-to meal?

It has to be Chipotle. I have a bowl with double chicken, white rice, corn, cheese, mild salsa and lettuce.

If you could play and excel at any position in another sport, what would it be?

Football definitely — I played football when I was younger but quit because I wanted to focus on basketball.
