Veterans to be honored and invited to play free golf

At 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, the city of Winter Park will present its sixth annual Veterans Day Celebration “Honoring Winter Park Heroes.” This event will be held in honor of all of the veterans of Winter Park at the Winter Park Community Center Ruby Ball Amphitheatre located at 721 W. New England Ave. The program will include remarks by guest speaker Lt. Col. Mark E. Green, Inspector General for the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).

The city calls all veterans that have served in any military campaign or branch in honor of our nation’s freedom. This event pays tribute to their dedicated service to our country, and the community is invited to join us in honoring these distinguished men and women.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the VFW Post 2093 Community Band will be entertaining guests as they visit with organizations and services that offer resources specifically for veteran needs. At 10 a.m., the official program will begin with musical tributes, anecdotal speakers including Lt. Col. Green, and recognition of veterans according to the various military branches served.

The Veterans Day Celebration continues at the newly renovated, nine-hole Winter Park Golf Course, located at 761 Old England Ave., with a Veterans Golf Play Day. Tee times begin at 12:30 p.m. and veterans play for free.

— Second reading of the ordinance amending the official zoning map to change from Single Family Residential (R-1A) District zoning to Parking Lot (PL) District zoning on the property at 520 S. Pennsylvania Ave.

• First reading of the ordinance repealing and replacing Chapter 82, Solid Waste, Article I, in General and Article II, Municipal Collection and Disposal Service.

• First reading of the ordinance proposing an amendment to the City Charter eliminating Primary Elections for candidates for city commission and mayor and providing for run-off elections; submitting proposed Charter amendment to a vote by the electors of Winter Park via referendum at the general city election to be held Tuesday, March 14, 2017; providing for amendment of Chapter 42 of the City Code regarding city elections if the Charter amendment is adopted.

• First reading of the ordinance amending the adopted budget and accompanying the 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan for FY2015-2016.

This public hearing must be held after 5:01 p.m.

• First reading of the ordinance amending the Comprehensive Plan and Chapter 58 “Land Development Code,” Article 1, “Comprehensive Plan” so as to adopt a new City of Winter Park Comprehensive Plan, Goals, Objectives and Policies document, substituting for the current 2009 Comprehensive Plan adopted Feb. 23, 2009, together with all subsequent amendments.

Central Florida joins the national ‘Let’s Recycle Right’ kickoff event

Who: Orlando International Airport, city of Winter Park, Recycle Across America and national brand leaders will be celebrating America Recycles Day at Orlando International Airport Tuesday, Nov. 15. This collection of government, non-profit, private companies, educational institutions and celebrities will come together to launch a standardized recycling labeling campaign called “Let’s Recycle Right” created by Recycle Across America to help improve U.S. recycling.

Why: The goal of the campaign is to re-energize local and national recycling efforts by reducing the confusing and inconsistent labeling on recycling bins and containers making it easier for people to recycle more and recycle right, wherever they might be.

What: America Recycles Day, Let’s Recycle Right Kickoff

Where: The event will take place in the atrium area of the Hyatt Hotel at Orlando International Airport, third level in front of the security checkpoint for gates 70-129

When: 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15

Central Park West Meadow will freeze

Beginning Friday, Nov. 18, through Sunday, Jan. 8, the city of Winter Park will bundle up once again for “Winter in the Park,” the city’s annual holiday ice skating rink, presented by the Community Redevelopment Agency. The rink is located in Central Park West Meadow located at 150 N. New York Ave., on the corner of New York Avenue and Morse Boulevard.

Opening day, Friday, Nov. 18, will feature half price entry for everyone!

Snowflakes of all ages and skill levels are invited to chill out at Winter in the Park during the following hours:

• Monday through Thursday, 3 to 9 p.m.

• Friday, 3 to 10 p.m.

• Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Sunday, noon to 8 p.m.

Snow angels are invited to skate all day for only $12 per skater (skate rental included). For a blizzard of 20 or more people, cool group discounts are available. If you are interested in bringing your whole igloo to celebrate birthdays, special events, private parties or corporate holiday gatherings, the rink is available for rental opportunities. Advance reservations are required for private party and group events to avoid an avalanche of skaters.
