City to dedicate Fallen Heroes Memorial

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m., the city of Winter Park will hold a special ceremony dedicating the Winter Park Fallen Heroes Memorial carefully constructed at the entrances to the Public Safety Facility located at the corner of Canton and Virginia avenues. The memorial honors those heroes lost Sept. 11, 2001, in addition to those public safety professionals who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community.

All of the architectural elements included in the memorial are specifically designed to remember the tragic events of Sept. 11. The centerpiece of the memorial features a black granite conical stand rising from an area of crushed stone upon which an authentic artifact from the World Trade Center is mounted. Moving away from the centerpiece, two defined gray brick memorial walkways are engraved with local memorials sponsored through donations. A special stone memorial recognizes local public safety officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Much of the memorial is at grade level with only the featured artifact stand rising about 4 feet with the memorial walks extending 25 to 30 feet from the center.

The Winter Park Fallen Heroes Memorial is truly a community project. From the approvals of both Winter Park’s Public Art Advisory Board and City Commission to the architectural design work to the funding for the construction, local Winter Park individuals and organizations join hands to bring this memorial to life. The project was designed by Mr. John Cunningham of ACI Inc. of Winter Park, with the initial construction drawings being offered through Mr. Lance Walker of Walker Construction Inc. also of Winter Park. Finally, the project would not have been brought to design without the financial commitment of the Winter Park Rotary Club.

To purchase a memorial brick, please call 407-599-3298 or visit cityofwinterpark.org > Departments > Fire-Rescue. Thank you for helping the city keep our heroes’ memory alive.

What’s that large sculpture on City Hall’s front lawn?

A large structure landed on the front lawn of City Hall. The official name of this Russell Bellamy’s sculpture is “St. Prego.” This sculpture is the first of eight public art pieces that will be installed throughout downtown Winter Park as part of the city’s and Public Art Advisory Board’s Art on the Green 2012 exhibit.

Art on the Green 2012 will feature the unique and creative works of seven other noted sculptors and will be on display through Friday, March 1, concurrent with Central Park and City Hall park hours. Exhibition catalogues will be available at City Hall and the Winter Park Welcome Center, located at 151 W. Lyman Ave., during regular business hours.

Selected by curator Olga Viso, Rollins College graduate and executive director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Art on the Green 2012 collection includes a range of sculptures from elaborate bronze pieces to those fashioned from stainless steel and reclaimed materials.

The Art on the Green 2012 exhibition can be viewed free of admission seven days a week. A fun, family-friendly opening event and sculpture hunt will also be held Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon, in front of Winter Park City Hall.
