April 25 City Commission meeting highlights

Mayor’s Report

Proclamations were presented in honor of Support Our Scholars Graduation Month; North American Occupational Safety and Health Week; Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day; Falun Dafa Day; and Deputy Police Chief Vernon Taylor Day in honor of his retirement.

The Tree City USA, Tree City Growth USA & Tree Line USA awards were presented.

Non-Action Items

Backyard chickens pilot program was discussed and no action was taken.

Consent Agenda

The minutes for April 11 were approved with a modification.

The contracts were approved (for a complete listing visit cityofwinterpark.org/ccpackets).

The relocation reimbursement agreement with Duke Energy of Florida regarding the Fairbanks Avenue undergrounding project was pulled off the agenda and will be rescheduled at a future meeting.

Action Items Requiring Discussion

Showalter Field use agreement was approved.

Public Hearings

The request of Z Properties for a subdivision or lot split to divide the property at 360 Beloit Ave. into two, single-family building lots was approved with amendments.

The first reading of the ordinance vacating utility easements for lots bounded by New England, Virginia and Welbourne avenues and Hannibal Square East was approved.

The first reading of the ordinance amending ordinance numbers 2843-11 and 2880-12, Article III, Chapter 2, city code regarding city boards and commissions; and amending Chapter 22, Article II, Section 22-28 “Amendments to Florida Building Code,” Subsection 113, concerning the Construction Board of Appeals was approved with amendments.

The agenda item regarding the first readings of the ordinances concerning fast food and drive in businesses along West Fairbanks corridor was pulled and will be scheduled for a public hearing at a future date.

A full copy of the April 25 City Commission minutes will be available at cityofwinterpark.org/ccminutes the week of May 9, pending approval by the City Commission.

Free living healthy workshops

The Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department has partnered with the Senior Resource Alliance-Area Agency on Aging of Central Florida to offer the free Living Healthy and Living Healthy with Diabetes community workshops. Both classes will be held at the Fire-Rescue Headquarters located at 343 W. Canton Ave.

Living Healthy is a six-week workshop that will be offered on Mondays beginning Monday, May 2, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. This workshop is designed for people living with an ongoing or chronic health condition such as arthritis, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and others.

Living Healthy with Diabetes is also a six-week workshop designed for people living with type-2 diabetes and will be offered on Fridays beginning Friday, May 20, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Spring Cleanup time!

This annual Spring Cleanup provides an extra “bonus” pickup day so that residents can dispose of old furniture, broken appliances and other bulky items. To take advantage of this convenient service, residents must place their items curbside after 5 p.m. on the evening prior to their second regularly scheduled pickup day.

If you live north of Fairbanks/Aloma avenues, your assigned pick-up day is Thursday, May 5, or Friday, May 6.

If you live south of Fairbanks/Aloma avenues, your assigned pick-up day is Thursday, May 12, or Friday, May 13

PLEASE NOTE:

Hazardous waste, electronics and yard waste are not included in the Spring Cleanup.

If you live in an apartment, townhome or condo that does not provide curbside service, please contact Waste Pro directly for a large item pickup (fees may apply).

Library Community Conversations

The Winter Park Public Library Board will host three Community Conversations to begin clarifying the community’s wants and needs for materials, programs and services in the context of all we now know about what is planned. These meetings will take place at the Winter Park Public Library located at 460 E. New England Ave. Please make plans to attend one or more of the following Community Conversations:

Thursday, May 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Saturday, May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon

Friday, May 13 from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Public meetings to discuss Denning Drive

The city, with assistance from GAI Consultants Inc., will hold two public involvement meetings to discuss Denning Drive, its current conditions, and future possibilities. The first meeting, will be in a workshop format and held Thursday, May 12. The follow-up meeting, will be held Tuesday, June 7. Both meetings will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center located at 1050 W. Morse Blvd., and public input is encouraged.
