Clean the World Foundation Inc. seeks $25,000 in prize winnings through the national Pepsi Refresh Everything Project to help promote its ambitious soap and shampoo recycling efforts worldwide. Orlando-based Clean the World collects and recycles soap and shampoos from a growing network of hotel partners and generous individuals and organizations to help prevent the spread of disease, promote general cleanliness, provide jobs for homeless individuals, eliminate landfill waste and, ultimately, save lives. Orlando Bipolar Support is a support group in the Greater Orlando (Central Florida) region that exists solely to help people, like ourselves, with bipolar disorder. Boys Town of Central Florida youth recently received many exciting outings thanks to a partnership with the University of Central Florida. This semester, three teams held car washes, bake sales, bussed tables and reached out to businesses for non-monetary donations to give the youth fun outings. Team Bizzie Beez raised more than $800 to take Central Florida youth on a bowling outing, the Active Athletes raised more than $1,000 to provide a field day and UCF basketball outing for the shelter and residential children, and Cornerstone Enterprises earned over $1,000 in monetary donations and more than $3,000 in non-monetary donations to take long-term residents on a day trip to Universal Studios Theme Park.

The 10/11-year-old Maitland Little League All-Star team continued its winning streak at the Tournament of State Champions regional tournament in Greenville, N.C. After being selected to represent Florida in the regional tournament, the team has won four straight games and now advances to the championship game, where it will face the team from Alabama. Maitland beat North Carolina (Greenville) 6-5. In total during this tournament, the Maitland team has racked up impressive stats, scoring 45 runs on 61 hits in 22 innings, including two grand slams.

The Orange County Health Department is again reminding everyone to be cautious of amoebic infections, since Central Florida has had record heat and dry conditions this summer. Everyone should take precautions while swimming in warm, freshwater lakes and ponds due to the threat posed by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri.
