Winter Park YMCA’s swim team, the Pirates, participated in the state YMCA swim meet Feb. 4-6. Coached by brothers Patrick and Marty Topps, the Pirates had eight participants and swam as part of the YMCA Central Florida team. Leah Howell placed fourth overall in the 50-yard butterfly for 8 and under. Rebekah Ryan dropped 5.61 seconds in the 100-yard individual medley and placed first in many heats. Charlie Shortt-Carter, Lauren Bergquist, Jennifer Kalley, Erin Clifton, Fernan LeBron and Peyton Earl posted record times and many finished first or second in their heats. Ms. Susanne Marie Shepherdson, a senior History and Entrepreneurial Small Business Management major from Maitland, was named to the Dean’s List at Huntington University for the fall semester.
On Jan. 28, Grandma’s House, at the Orlando Health and Rehabilitation Center, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil its new gazebo donated by RLF employees.
Three Central Florida churches are establishing faith community nursing programs thanks to grants made possible by the Winter Park Health Foundation. Newly selected grant recipients include Redeemer Lutheran Church and First Congregational Church, both of Winter Park, and First Presbyterian Church of Maitland. The programs are scheduled to begin in February.
On Friday, Feb. 11, more than 30 patients at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children received a special Valentine’s gift: a personalized teddy bear. Among those who received a little bear from the University of Phoenix in Central Florida was Danna, a young Leukemia patient.
The 12 students in Florida Hospital’s Healthy 100 Kids program “rallied” together the more than 600 students at Park Maitland School for a Healthy 100 Assembly. The main purpose of the assembly was to get every student in the school excited about living a healthier lifestyle. Visit Healthy100.org
