Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area recently celebrated National Women Build Week, an initiative designed to empower women to take action against poverty housing conditions and raised more than $100,000. Visit habitat-orlando.org/Women-Build

Julie Becker of the Tarflower Chapter has donated a quilt for a drawing at the Florida Native Plant Society’s 31st Annual Conference and Native Plant Sale at the Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland. Drawing tickets will be available for $10 each. Visit fnps.org/

At the start of the 2011-2012 school year, students at Jewish Academy of Orlando in grades 4-8 will be issued a new iPad2 and MacBook to make learning mobile 24/7. The iPads come courtesy of Marc and Henrietta Katzen and their Katzen Technology Grant Program established at the Maitland school more than 15 years ago.

Winter Park resident and Union College senior Angela McLelland was on a team that took fifth place overall in its division of the SAE Aero East Competition. The students tied for first in the operational availability category.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida recently held its annual Dinner of Tribute, hosting more than 600 supporters at the Rosen Plaza Hotel and honoring Ronald Blocker, the Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools. Visit facebook.com/HMREC

Andrew Abercrombie of Winter Park graduated from the Bryan College School of Arts and Sciences on Saturday, May 7. Andrew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Abercrombie, received the Bachelor of Arts degree, with highest honors, in English literature.

Goodwill Industries of Central Florida recently held an “Employment Boot Camp.” More than 200 job seekers attended the free event to receive help with resume development and interviewing skills. More than 20 employers, vendors and government agencies were present.


On May 6, RLF awarded three graduating seniors from Lyman High School with scholarships as part of the Architectural Design Scholarship Awards program. The winners were:

• Cody Weston (pictured with Chairman of the Board Ron Lowry), first prize winner, awarded $1,000.

• Mayer Halikman, second prize winner, awarded $700.

• Josh Collins, third prize winner, awarded $500.

Olde Town Brokers recently celebrated its 17th anniversary with breakfast at Dexter’s in Thornton Park and a group photo.

CVS Caremark has teamed up with celebrities and professional athletes to host the Seventh Annual Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament, a two-day event that has raised more than $75,000 this year in support of Children’s Cancer Center Tampa Bay and Easter Seals Florida.

The University Club of Orlando Foundation raised more than $8,000 for college and university scholarships for Central Florida students at its recent golf tournament, held at Stoneybrook West in Winter Garden.

Cuhaci & Peterson Architects, LLC, based in Orlando’s Baldwin Park, was recently awarded a contract to design a new Dollar General facility on French Avenue in Sanford.

Orange County-based O, R&L Facility Services was recently awarded the contract to provide facility management, maintenance and janitorial services for Church Street Station in Orlando.
