Local Maitland troop adds birthday sparkle to New Hope for Kids

Maitland Troop #4513 (ages 10-12) helped to decorate the special Birthday space at New Hope for Kids Center for Grieving Children, 900 N. Maitland Ave., as part of their service and community involvement. The children in the grief program (ages 3-18) are allowed to visit this room on the group session closest to their actual birthday. Each child is allowed to choose one gift for themselves. On July 17, the girl scouts added birthday excitement to the blank space with handmade signs and decorations to create a true celebration feel.

Summer interns learn about real estate industry

WPHS students chosen for Merit Scholarships

Orange County Public Schools celebrates the announcement of nine more 2012 graduates who were chosen as college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners. The district has a total of 19 students receiving this honorable academic achievement in 2012. The winners will receive between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. Xi Ao Zhang, of Winter Park High School, will attend the University of Florida, majoring in civil engineering. Emmanuel Momot, of Winter Park High School, will attend the University of Florida, majoring in engineering.

WPHS students selected for paid internships

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation selected five Orlando area high school students to take part in the 2012 Student Leaders program, which awards 225 paid eight-week summer internships at local nonprofit organizations. Jeremy Zhang, a rising senior at Winter Park High School, is interning at the East Altamonte Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida. Elizabeth Moore, also a rising senior at WPHS, is interning at the Joe R. Lee Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida. Maitland graduate honored for 100cameras nonprofit

Emily Schendel, (Orangewood Christian School, Maitland, graduate) was awarded the 2012 Time Warner Heiskell Award for Community Service. Emily is a manager for strategic acquisitions, investments and partnerships for HBO. This is Time Warner's highest honor for its employees. Emily co-founded and serves as president and financial director of 100cameras, a 501(c)(3) organization that empowers marginalized children to document their lives through photography and to create positive changes in their communities. 100cameras has sponsored projects in Sudan, New York City and Cuba and is partnering with Samsung and Whole Foods. The group has raised more than $90,000 to aid communities where children are living in poor conditions. Visit 100cameras.org

A&H museum accepting applications for artist program

The Art and History Museums – Maitland (A&H) announces a call to artists to participate in its 2012-2013 Artist-in-Action (AIA) program. This program provides non-residential studio space to an established or emerging artist for the professional practice and research of fine art. The deadline for applications is Aug. 1. Road to Recovery program looking for volunteers

The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program is currently recruiting volunteers to drive local cancer patients to and from their chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. Ethos Vegan Kitchen is moving to the corner of Fairbanks and New York Avenue this month. Junior Achievement (JA) of Central Florida needs volunteers for the upcoming fall semester to teach JA classes in Orange County and Seminole County elementary, middle and high schools.
