Winter Park resident places third at surfing championship

Fifteen-year-old Winter Park resident Fisher Grant placed third in the USA Surfing Championships in the Stand-Up paddleboard/surf division, fifth in the junior longboard division and sixth in the National Highschool Championships. He continues more competition this week in Huntington Beach, Calif. He was outfitted with a SUP board from East Coast Paddle in New Smyrna Beach. For more information, visit

Eagle Scouts from same troop recognized by commissioner

District 2 Orange County Commissioner Frederick C. Brummer and the Board of County Commissioners recognized eight Eagle Scouts from the same Eatonville Scout Troop on June 19. The scouts, James Ryan Charleston, Justin Anthony Edge, Evan Douglas Lewis, Calvin Long II, Kerrington Xavier Munson, Bradley Alexander Porter, Duane Stack and Langston Hughes Tarver, are from Boy Scout Troop 603 Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

Students from Winter Park honored

Riley Hawkins graduated with a bachelor's degree in international political economics from Colorado College. Hawkins is the son of Bruce and Wendy Hawkins of Winter Park.

Andrew McCorkle of Winter Park graduated cum laude from the University of San Diego May 27. McCorkle earned a bachelor's degree in marketing.

Ryan Hamner of Maitland was named to the Dean's List at University of Rhode Island.

Ryan Healey, a resident of Winter Park, has earned placement on the Gonzaga University President's List for spring semester 2012.

Orlando Cub Scouts tour radio station

On Saturday, April 14, the Cub Scout Pack 999 of Orlando took a tour of the 91.5 WPRK FM studios, led by WPRK Public Relations Coordinator Lauren Silvestri. The tour made the scouts eligible for their communications badge, as they learned about what goes into running a radio station and how they broadcast. The scouts even got a chance to be on air with DJ White Lightning!

New executive director takes over for Hickley

After 29 years of excellent service to the community, Lynda Hickley has retired as executive director of the Winter Park Housing Authority. The new executive director is Patricia "Patsy" Rice, who has spent more than 14 years as a senior administrator with the Orlando Housing Authority. She holds a master of public policy degree from the University of Maryland, where she participated in the HUD Masters program in 2001. Ms. Rice was also recently appointed to the City of Orlando's Affordable Housing Commission.

New exhibit to show WPHS through the years

“Growing Up Wildcat: Winter Park High School Through the Years” will open an interactive experience at the Winter Park Historical Museum on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. The WPHA is looking for the following items to be loaned for the exhibition: memorabilia, photos, videos, yearbooks (donation only) and memories/stories from 1917-present. Call 407-647-2330 or visit

Countdown to Winter Park’s 125th anniversary continues

The 125-day countdown to the city of Winter Park’s 125th anniversary started June 9 and continues until Friday, Oct. 12. For the next 125 days, the city will be posting historical facts on Facebook and Twitter reminding the community about its rich and interesting history. The city has launched a new 125th anniversary button on the home page of its official website,, highlighting all of the celebrations and events, and providing historical resources and pertinent information associated with this milestone.

Goodwill hosts food drive for Second Harvest

During the month of June, all Goodwill retail stores and donation centers in Central Florida will participate in the “Fill the Need” food drive with Second Harvest Food Bank. Donations will support Second Harvest’s “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope” campaign, which helps feed children while school is out during the summer months. Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items along with their Goodwill donations. The drive runs through June 30. To find the nearest retail center, please visit
