Great orators

Winter Park Institute at Rollins College’s spring season recently came to a close with filmmaker Oliver Stone speaking to more than 1,500 people. Since its inception five years ago, Winter Park Institute has introduced the Central Florida community to more than 50 world-renowned intellectual leaders. Taste of Winter Park winners

On April 17 the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce hosted the 28th annual Taste of Winter Park. Forty-five of the area’s finest restaurants served more than 1,300 attendees. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar was honored with Best Entrée for its filet and crab cake served with béarnaise sauce. Best Side Dish was presented to Mitchell’s Fish Market for its shrimp and scallop ceviche. 4 Rivers Smokehouse’s Sweet Shop earned the restaurant the Best Dessert nod for its bourbon ice cream. The Best Booth Display went to Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen. The Best Healthy Dish was presented to East End Market, whose vendor Txokos created a fresh seafood salad. Best Fresh Florida Dish was Cask & Larder’s smoked Canaveral cobia was served with a wheatberry salad, pickled green beans, tomatoes and a horseradish crème fraîche.

Sinclair wins again

Rollins College’s Dr. John V. Sinclair was among three distinguished alumni from William Jewell College honored at the college’s 69th annual Achievement Day. The Achievement Day honorees are recognized for their significant contributions in their respective fields.

Walk ‘n’ read

Maitland Public Library is now a partner with the Healthy Maitland Program. At 6:30 a.m. every Thursday morning, dedicated, healthy walkers step out from the Maitland Public Library for their morning exercise. Walkers return to the library for coffee or tea and a little conversation.

New Rollins scholarship

The Hamilton Holt School at Rollins College recently announced the establishment of the “Dean’s Scholarship for Leadership in the African American Community.” The scholarship will be awarded to a disadvantaged adult student entering the Holt School as a freshman in fall 2013. After the student has completed their sophomore and junior years as a full time student, he/she will receive two tuition-free summer courses – bringing the value of the scholarship to $11,000.

Sidewalk festival winners

Winners of the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival are as follows: Best of Show – painting by Matthew Cornell of Orlando, “Middle America”; Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Art of Philanthropy Award - photography by Greg Davis of Austin, Texas, “Blanket Weaver, Vietnam”; and the Morse Museum Award for a Distinguished Work of Art - painting by Aletha A. Jones of Madison, Wis., “Ventures in the Garden under the Guise of Folly.”
