Thank you, Maitland veterans, service men and women, and guests for your participation in the event honoring and celebrating veterans on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Venue on the Lake.

The event started at 3:30 p.m. with music from the Maitland Military Band under the direction of Gary Blalock, USN.

The formal program began at 4 p.m. Vice Mayor Ivan Valdes, USMC, presented a veterans proclamation and an American flag once flown above the U.S. Capitol to the audience. Copies of the proclamations were distributed to veterans during the reception.

The Orlando Devil Dogs Young Marines performed the “Presentation of the Colors” to the audience. The Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star-Spangled Banner” followed the colors presentation.

The Maitland Military Band performed a medley of the U.S. Navy’s “Anchors Aweigh,” the U.S. Marine Corps’ “Marines’ Hymn,” the U.S. Air Force’s “Wild Blue Yonder,” the U.S. Army’s “The Army Goes Rolling Along,” and the U.S. Coast Guard’s “Semper Paratus.” Audience members stood up when the song of their military branch was played.

Lt. Colonel William W. Yates, USMC, gave a talk about the importance of veterans in our community. He spoke about his personal interest in serving in the military. He knew he wanted to pursue a military career when he was an impressionable child during the United States Bicentennial in the mid-1970s.

Major Doug Ward, USAF – retired, delivered the invocation and the benediction.

After the program, veterans, service men and women, and their guests were treated to all-American fare in the east wing of the Maitland Civic Center: hamburgers, hot dogs, cake and ice cream.

Thank you, veterans and service men and women, for your tireless and selfless service to our country. We salute you. Happy Veterans Day!
