Independence Day illuminations

In 1776, John Adams, one of our founding fathers, wrote to his wife Abigail addressing our nation’s independence, “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

As a tradition, fireworks have become synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day. Huge professional displays can see seen from “one end of this continent to the other” memorializing the sacrifices of previous generations and celebrating our nation’s birthday.

Florida alone has hundreds of fireworks displays from Pensacola to Miami, Fernandina to Key West, and all parts in between. These shows range from huge spectaculars in the vein of the theme parks to smaller local venues that can show just as much enthusiasm and pride in our country.

The common elements of these shows are they are organized and operated by professionally trained companies and individuals. The shows are checked for safety and compliance with nationally recognized good practices for handling what amount to bombs.

Due to the hazards associated with fireworks, the rules and regulations in Florida prohibit the sale of items to the general public that explode or fly. Such devices include firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles, and cherry bombs. In addition to this, fireworks containing any explosives or flammable compound are considered illegal.

Approved types of sparklers and fountains can be found on the Florida State Fire Marshal’s website at http://bit.ly/FlaStateFireMarshalSparklerList. If you or your neighbors must have a private show, prepackage kits – such as those sold through our local grocery stores – contain items on this list that are legal.

John Adams got his wish for a nationwide celebration, but we’re sure he would want us to make it a safe celebration. This year, as in previous years, we ask you please leave fireworks to the professionals, check the local listings and find a public fireworks display. The technicians firing such public displays will keep the fireworks and risk away from you and your family. You’ll get a bigger and better show.

On behalf of the Maitland Fire Rescue Department, your firefighters, we wish you a safe and happy Independence Day.
