OSS students and teachers recognized

Orlando Science Schools students Sanjana Konda and Esha Ranade from Orlando, and Minh Le, Meghana Talluri and Tran Le from Winter Garden were five of the 150 applicants nationwide chosen to receive a MathMovesU scholarship from the Raytheon Company. The OSS students worked with their instructors to submit a multimedia presentation about the importance of mathematics. The scholarship can be used for a math, science or technology program, or for the first year of college. Math teachers Mr. Abdulkerim Akyalcin and Mrs. Ozlem Akyalcin were also honored with the prestigious Raytheon Company “Math Heroes” award. This award recognizes instructors for their creativity in demonstrating the wonders of math and science in their classrooms. Maitland residents Mr. and Mrs. Akyalcin are two of the 25 teachers across the country to win the award for using interactive and creative learning approaches in the classroom to keep students engaged in mathematics. Nominated by parents, students and colleagues, each winner is awarded $2,500 in addition to a matching grant for his or her school.
