April 11 City Commission meeting highlights

Mayor’s Report

• Proclamations were presented in honor of Earth Month and National Library Week.

• Plaques were presented to three Keep Winter Park Beautiful sponsors in appreciation of their support.

• Fiddler’s Green Irish Pub & Eatery was presented the Business Recognition Award First Quarter 2016 recipient.

• Inside the City: Episode III - Code Compliance was presented and can be viewed on the homepage of the city’s official website at cityofwinterpark.org, Vimeo and YouTube.

Consent Agenda

• The minutes for March 28, 2016, were approved with a modification.

• The purchase and contracts were approved (for a complete listing visit cityofwinterpark.org/ccpackets)

Action Items Requiring Discussion

• Commissioner Sarah Sprinkel was re-appointed as Vice Mayor.

• The master plan for city-owned properties was discussed and initial direction was given to city staff on the items presented.

• City staff was directed to draft a revised Historic Preservation Ordinance reflecting two changes:

— Add language to SEC. 58-433 of the policy regarding voluntary preservation.

— Revise the 50 plus 1 percent to two-thirds in district voting.

The Historic Preservation Board along with city staff will discuss the other items, which may or may not impact the ordinance language. No date was set for the first public hearing of the revised ordinance.

• A naming policy for library construction funding was discussed, however, no vote was taken on the policy as presented.

Public Hearings

• Request of Z Properties was tabled to Monday, April 25.

• The fee schedule was adopted effective May 1, with one amendment.

• The first reading of the ordinance amending Ordinance No. 2843-11 and 2880-12, Article III, Chapter 2, city code regarding city boards and commissions was tabled to Monday, April 25.

A full copy of the April 11 City Commission minutes will be available at cityofwinterpark.org/ccminutes the week of April 25, pending approval by the City Commission.

CoffeeTalk featuring Planning & Community Development

Have a cup of conversation with Planning & Community Development Director Dori Stone Thursday, April 14, at 8 a.m. at the Winter Park Welcome Center located at 151 W. Lyman Ave. This free, popular CoffeeTalk series gives the community an opportunity to sit down and talk with our city leaders over a cup of coffee provided by Barnie’s Coffee Kitchen. CoffeeTalk provides a more informal setting to share ideas, concerns and thoughts with city leaders. We hope to see you there!

Household hazardous waste drop off

The city of Winter Park, in partnership with Waste Pro for household hazardous waste and A1 Assets Inc. for e-waste, will be offering waste disposal for all city residents Saturday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Compound located at 1409 Howell Branch Road.

Accepted items

• antifreeze

• e-waste (computers, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, FAX machines, CD players and stereos)

• fertilizers and pesticides

• gasoline

• household chemicals

• non-alkaline batteries (regular alkaline batteries can be disposed of in your regular household trash)

• oil-based paint (wet or dry)

• paint thinners

• pool chemicals

• propane tanks

• tires (four max)

• used engine oil

• wet latex paint (dried latex paint can be disposed of with your regular household trash)

Helpful tips

• Bring your proof of city residency (driver’s license or utility bill statement).

• Keep all hazardous waste materials in original containers with original labeling (unknown items will not be accepted).

• This drop off is for residential only. No contractors, please.

• Drugs and prescription meds go to the Public Safety Facility (500 N. Virginia Ave., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday)

Being more than a city resident

The city has approximately 20 advisory boards that deal with a variety of topics ranging from development, parks, lakes, public art, trees and other city attributes that contribute to our quality of life. These 150-plus residents meet on a regular basis to study and discuss city topics prior to making recommendations for the City Commission to consider when having to make decisions on these important topics.

If you would have an expertise in a specific area and like to influence decisions, see changes made in specific areas, or simply want to become more involved in your city, please submit a board application form found on the city’s official website at cityofwinterpark.org under Government > Boards.

Winter Park is full of talent and serving on a board is one way to share your expertise while helping make your city the best place to live, work and play in Florida.
