School board discusses millage rate, 2016-17 tentative budget

The final public hearing for the budget will be held Tuesday, September 13.

The Orange County School Board adopted 7.811 mills as the rate that will support the 2016-17 proposed budget. This is less than the 2015-16 rate of 8.218 mills. 

The School Board also discussed the tentative budget and will hold a final meeting in regards to the budget 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 13.

The budget aids the growth of the county, with new schools opening in West Orange County as well as in other areas of the county. In addition, several schools such as Maxey Elementary are gaining improvements via construction or redesign. 

Other appropriations of the budget include the expansion of digital curriculum in the county, site acquisition for future schools, district-wide painting, school bus replacement, charter school capital funding and capital renewal. 

The proposed budget:  

General Fund: $2,013,923,245

Special Revenue Fund: $131,839,648

Debt Service Fund: $224,404,557

Capital Projects Fund: $916,192,600

Internal Service Fund: $311,542,776

WHAT IS MILLAGE RATE?

Millage rate is the rate per $1,000 used to assess your property taxes. Millage rates are decided through public hearings from entities with funding from public tax dollars such as public schools, city  government and county governments.
