Maitland Police Department Will Take Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Saturday, Oct.ober 22, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Maitland Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its twelfth opportunity in six years to drop off unused medication for destruction at the Maitland Police Department at 1837 Fennell Street. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. The DEA can only accept pills or patches; it cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – both pose potential safety, environmental and health hazards.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the Oct. 22 Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website at http://bit.ly/2ehhRji.

Lane Closures Due to Repaving of Roads

The paving contractor, Hubbard Construction Company, has started milling and repaving operations on select city streets. The contractor will distribute door hangers and set-up temporary traffic control as needed. Lane closures are expected. Road closures are not anticipated at this time; however, if road closures become necessary, a detour will be set up with appropriate signage.

Paving activities will take place within the hours of 7 am. through 5 p.m. daily for about two weeks. Paving locations and tentative schedule (dependent upon the weather) are as follows:

• Dommerich Drive (from Horatio Avenue to Comanche Trail) – Oct. 17-19

• Minnehaha Circle (from Kyle Drive to Kyle Drive) – Oct. 17-19

• Arapaho Trail (from Algonquin Trail to Thunderbird Trail) – Oct. 19-21

• White Oak Circle – Oct. 20-21

• Warrens Ave (from Kentucky Avenue to Thompson Drive) – Oct. 21-25
