John Cothron, a personal trainer at Roper Family YMCA, began his fitness journey in the U.S. Army.

Having been involved in the fitness scene for several years, John Cothron, who is a personal trainer at Roper Family YMCA, is all about helping his clients achieve their fitness goals and live a better, healthier lifestyle.


How did you get involved in fitness?

Initially it was because of the Army. I spent 20 years in the Army, and once I retired, I became a personal trainer.

Why did you decide to become a personal trainer?

The last government contract job I was on had to be reduced, and I was picked. I could not find another job, so I tried something new. I got certified as a personal trainer and started working at the YMCA as soon as an opportunity presented itself.

What do you enjoy about being a personal trainer?

I’ve found, especially here at the YMCA, that the people who come here are looking for someone to give them a hand with their health and wellness. So I enjoy helping them with that.

How did the Army prepare you for life as a personal trainer?

It helped me to be able to look at each person as an individual and not in a cookie-cutter form. It also helps me push their own boundaries.

What is your philosophy as a personal trainer?

I want to educate my clients while I train them. If they learn how to properly exercise in a safe manner, they can do it safely by themselves when I’m not there. And I want them to push themselves.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to ride my motorcycle, go canoeing with my son and be lazy and not do anything.

How big is your family?

I have five children - three boys and two girls. And I have eight grandkids.

What is your favorite TV show?

“The Blacklist.” My wife and I really enjoy that show.
