A new $1 million budget plan for security funding at Jewish Day Schools was announced at the Roth Family Jewish Community Center in Maitland on Thursday.

Gov. Rick Scott made the announcement alongside Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Maitland Mayor Dale McDonald at the JCC in a move to help bolster security at JCCs around the state by providing money for counter-terrorism and safety equipment including things such as security cameras, fences, and alarm systems.

The fund was put into place following multiple threats that have been aimed at JCCs in Florida, which also includes threats toward the Roth Family Jewish Community Center.

“Every Florida student deserves to have the opportunity to learn in a safe and comfortable setting," Gov. Scott said in a statement. "After Florida’s Jewish community received hateful threats last year, we saw the need to provide additional security so the children that attend Jewish Day Schools can learn without having to worry about feeling threatened."

Along with the newly developed $1 million budget plan, more than $645,000 for security funding for JCCs was included in the Florida's Future budget that was signed off on earlier this year.
