After transition to a new position as outside hitter, Tara English made an impressive start to the season during the Foundation Academy girl’s volleyball team’s home opener against Lake Forest. By the end of the game, English had landed six aces, five kills and seven digs - the best stats of the night. Her coach, Vicky Veloz, said she’s kept an eye on English and knew it was time to move her from the back row to the front row.

“She’s got talent - that’s for sure,” Veloz said.

How did you feel going into the first home game of the season?

Excited and nervous because it was the first time playing outside. I haven’t played outside in a while.

Did you surprise yourself by how well you played that first game?

I really did. I wasn’t expecting to do that good. I thought I would airball every single (hit), but it worked out.

What’s something you feel you need to work on now that you’re playing the front row?

Jumping and blocking. And I’m getting used to playing all around right now. I’m used to only playing three rotations in and three rotations out.

What’s it like being a starter for the first time this year?

Coming from the last club season, I barely had any playing time. This is a change, but it’s nice.

What was your reaction when you made those kills your first game?

I didn’t know I could do that. It was wow. It’s a fun feeling.

Why did you decide to start playing volleyball?

My sister started playing before me. I went to all her tournaments and it looked cool. I wanted to play too, so I did.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like going out on the lake. I like all the lake sports. Wake boarding and tubing are always fun.

What is your favorite TV show right now?

“Once Upon a Time.” It’s such a good series.
