After losing its first two games of the season - one of which went to a close match of five sets - the Windermere High School’s girls volleyball team won its first game of the season against Ocoee High. According to coach Layla West, freshman Cassidy Chambers is already proving herself to be a valuable asset to this newly-formed team.

How has it been helping create a new volleyball program at Windermere High?

In the beginning it was a little chaotic because we were all new and trying to mesh together. It wasn’t until after our second game, that we really clicked.

What is one strength that you bring to the team?

My defense. I like defense. It’s a lot more movement. You never know what to expect so you have to be on your toes.

As an outside hitter, how does it feel to get a great kill?

Accomplished and excited because I did something great for my team. We had created a good pass and from that a good set that I was able to put away for a point for my team.

How has it been playing with a new group of girls this year?

I’ve made so many new friends in all different grades, especially as a freshman at a new school.

What do you enjoy about volleyball?

The way it makes me feel. It’s kind of like my escape. It’s stress relieving for me because I’m in the moment.

How do you feel your team will do in the coming weeks?

I see victories for the team.

You also play beach volleyball, so how does that compare to indoor volleyball?

In beach, you get a lot of touches, and it’s a lot of self-correction. You learn from your mistakes. I feel that I learn more then I’m analyzing what I did wrong.

Are there any skills you hope to improve on during this year’s season at Windermere High?

I just want to contribute to the game and improve my hitting for beach.
