The city of Ocoee has issued the following release regarding collection of debris from Hurricane Irma:
The city of Ocoee has hired a debris management contractor to collect disaster-generated debris across the affected areas. City staff established an efficient and effective system in coordination with our debris contractor, so you, the citizen, will know what to expect and how to have your disaster-generated debris removed successfully.
Contractors are working seven days a week, 12 hours a day to collect ONLY disaster-generated debris. The city will begin curbside debris collection on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and expects the debris removal process to take two months. Your cooperation and patience is much appreciated during this trying time as the Ocoee community recovers together.
In an effort to reduce the amount of debris that has to be disposed of, as well as the associated debris disposal costs, the city will be recycling as many materials as possible. Residents are asked to separate disaster debris as follows, and place it in piles at the curb in the public right-of-way, not on private property:
- Metals (window frames; sheet metal siding and roofing; cast iron tubs / sinks; railings; appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, and stoves; mobile home frames; metal parts from cars; personal belongings that are metal such as damaged tools; metal furnishings such as chairs, tables, file cabinets, and bed frames; metal pipes; etc.)
- Wood materials (framing materials; plywood; wood flooring; decks and decking material; wood furniture such as tables and chairs; personal belongings that are wood such as picture frames; etc.)
- Dirt / sediment (soil, sand, gravel, etc.)
- Concrete (concrete chunks; concrete block; bricks; concrete pavers; etc.)
- Tires (from automobiles, bicycles, trailers, etc.)
- Glass (empty / clean bottles and jars, household items, window panes, glass block, etc.)
- Residual construction and demolition materials (non-recyclable building construction materials –drywall, asphalt shingles, plastic sinks / tubs, floor tiles, etc.; non-recyclable building contents and personal property – carpeting / rugs, furnishings, clothing, etc.)
- Vegetative materials (trees, limbs, brush, leaves, etc.)
As you prepare to place your debris curbside for collection, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Do not place debris on top of utilities, for example: cable, phone, electrical, storm drain boxes or fire hydrants.
- Please do not place debris in front of or around your mailbox.
- Please do not place debris in front of or around your driveway, as emergency vehicles may need to enter the area.
- Please drive with extreme caution in areas with large debris piles.
- Please do not block or dump any debris into the storm drains or ditches. This will cause a flood hazard.
- Please aid contractors by sweeping excess and loose debris from the street in front of your house.
- Report drainage problems to Ocoee Public Works, 407-905-3170.
