Sports Spotlight - West Orange Times & Observer: Erric Wynn

Erric Wynn is strong defender on West Orange High’s boys basketball team. At 6-foot-4, Wynn’s size and athleticism make him a valuable asset to the team’s defense. He earned his first triple-double in a recent game against Olympia.

How long have you been playing basketball?

I’ve been playing since the fourth grade.

How did you get started in the sport?

I got started with (basketball because of) my uncles. I’m surrounded by a sports family.

What’s the season been like for you this year?

I improved a lot. I’ve been working hard offensively and defensively.

What are some things you’ve improved upon this year? 

My effort. I’ve worked harder on defense than I’ve ever done before.

What are some things about your game that you think you should improve next?

Handling the ball and shooting it.

What is your favorite aspect of the sport and why?

Playing defense. I just like shutting everybody down.

Which game this season has been your favorite so far?

My best game was against probably ... Olympia because (the game) versus Olympia, I got a triple-double. That was my first triple-double.

Looking ahead, which game do you forward to the most?

(The game) versus Evans. It’s the first district game, so it’s win or go home, basically.

What are your favorite teams?

(For) college, Miami (Hurricanes). (For) NBA, the Orlando Magic.

What’s the best piece of basketball advice you’ve ever gotten?

When I was in the fifth or sixth grade, my coach used to tell me, ‘Just flush it.’ So if something happens (on the court), just forget about it and keep it moving. Forget about the last play. Worry about the next one.

What’s your favorite meal after a game?

I like to go to Chick-fil-A.

Do you have any post-game traditions?

Me and my teammates usually go to Chick-fil-A and sit down — or we go to McDonalds.

How do you spend your free time? What do you like to do to relax?

Usually I just play basketball. Sometimes, I just play my video games.
