Sports Spotlight: Mikayln Nash | Observer Preps

A senior co-captain on the Windermere girls basketball team, Mikayln Nash has made it her job to help lead the Wolverines to success in only their second year of existence. At the forward position, Nash has made it a routine scoring in the post and from beyond the arc — making her the ultimate dual threat. Beyond basketball, she hopes to eventually become a physician’s assistant to help people in need.

When did you first get into basketball?

I’ve been playing since I was around 10 years old, but I officially didn’t start playing with a team until middle school. My dad was a girls basketball coach, so I was always around girls who were athletes, and that just really got me motivated to become one, as well.

What’s been your favorite part about playing basketball at Windermere?

I would have to say my favorite thing is how we work so well together — we just work so well, and we click. We always make sure that everybody is doing their role.

What’s the best advice that Coach Misty Cox has given you?

She says a lot of inspirational things, but I think one of my favorite things she has said is, “No matter who is starting or who is on the bench, everyone has a specific role on this team, and we could not win without every single person on this team, and we are only as strong as our weakest link.”

What is your favorite aspect of playing at forward?

I get to be involved inside the post and be able to get rebounds and put them back up, while at the same time being able to step outside the three-point line and making shots back there, as well.

What’s the hardest part about playing forward?

Having to deal with other post players, because it’s kind of like a dog fight down there — having to fight for rebounds.

If there’s one highlight you take away from your time at Windermere, what would it be?

It would have to be probably making history — helping my team win its first district championship. That was a big milestone for our team and our school as a whole. It’s a great feeling.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

When I’m not playing basketball or doing school, I have a job, and I work most of my spare time. I also enjoy having time with my family — whether it’s going to the park or the beach. We always just have little things that we do when everyone is free.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would have to say Bora Bora, because I’m a beach girl, and I just want to go over there — it’s really beautiful.

What are your plans after you graduate?

I haven’t decided where I’m going yet, and I don’t know if I’m furthering my basketball career to the collegiate level, but I do know that I want to major in biology and later become a physician assistant.
