AdventHealth optimistic over decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations

The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over, but AdventHealth officials say the post-holiday surge in cases may have peaked.

AdventHealth’s Central Florida division reported a smaller number of COVID-19 hospitalizations this week, and health officials say this could mean the post-holiday case surge has peaked. 

However, Dr. Vincent Hsu, epidemiologist and AdventHealth’s infection control officer, said masks and other precautions are still “critical” for controlling the pandemic.

Hsu said the drop in hospitalizations is encouraging, but it doesn’t negate the need to continue wearing masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing to help slow the spread.

“Remember, this is a marathon,” Hsu said during an AdventHealth morning briefing Thursday, Jan. 21. “While, we’re hopefully in the home stretch, any stumbling or any falls are going to delay getting to the finish line.”

Patients who need medical care are encouraged to see their doctor or go to the emergency room rather than delay treatment. 

Hsu added that although AdventHealth has exhausted its current supply of vaccines, there will be more offered as they become available. Vaccines are not currently available at any AdventHealth hospital, AdventHealth Centra Care or AdventHealth Medical Group office.
