A group of 25 Windermere Prep students and a few staff members made the school's annual voyage to Africa for the Tanzania Seeway Expedition, a longstanding service learning program from Windermere Prep's parent company Nord Anglia Education.
Each year the expedition gives students the ability to learn about the local culture, systems and needs around the Maji ya Chai land sanctuary in the Arusha region of Tanzania.
Beyond the educational portion of the experience, the students also give back through a variety of community service projects. This year's group helped build three classrooms for an overcrowded and underfunded school in the area.
Another project the students participated in was a program called The Goat Shed Project. With the help of the school's local partner, Seeway Tanzania, the students worked with families in need to build a goat shed, gift the family a female goat, install solar lighting, and install a smokeless stove.
"As a trip chaperone, I was honored to learn alongside our students in Tanzania as we worked to significantly impact the lives of the families in the local communities," said Windermere Head of School Dr. Mitchell Salerno in a letter to the school's families. "Being a part of this expedition is a journey I look forward to each year, and I am proud of our Lakers for all of their hard work, dedication, and camaraderie throughout the trip."
