SEPTEMBER

West Morse Boulevard north of the Amtrak station in Winter Park will be closed from 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, until 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, for work on the SunRail project. There will be no overnight work between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. in accordance with city noise ordinances. The work will include the demolition and reconstruction of the rail crossing. The Winter Park Institute at Rollins College will host New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Alfond Sports Center, 1000 Holt Ave. He will discuss human rights violations regarding the oppression of women and girls in the developing world. Kristof co-authored the bestselling book “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” with his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, also a New York Times journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner. Kristof is often called the reporter’s reporter for his human right advocacy and his efforts to give voice to the voiceless. This is a free event, open to the public. No RSVP is necessary. Florida Opera Theatre presents “Opera in the Park,” a Winter Park opera concert series to be held in downtown Winter Park in an intimate setting for exclusive operatic performances at the Winter Park Wedding Chapel, 301 W. The Winter Park Public Library will have its annual fundraiser, Bash for Books, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Winter Park Civic Center. This year’s Bash will feature food, wine, a silent auction and raffles to raise money in support of the programs and services of the library. This year the fundraiser will celebrate “The Great Gatsby,” the acclaimed and infamous book by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Food at the event will feature tapas-size portions of dishes from Tibby’s, Prato, Cocina 214, Truffles Grill and Shipyard Brew Pub. Hollis Wilder, owner of Sweet by Holly, first two-time winner of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” and author of the upcoming cookbook “Savory Bites with ABRAMS,” will be on hand offering her famous cupcakes as dessert. Join Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a Florida Hospital, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, for the kick-off to “Pink Out Winter Park 2012” by setting a Guinness World Record for the most number of people standing on one leg in one place for two minutes. Pink Out Winter Park is an initiative to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer prevention by selling pink flamingos. Take part in the world record attempt and other fun activities such as a flamingo decorating contest, bounce house and more all to raise money and awareness for breast cancer! The Performing Arts of Maitland is sponsoring an evening of dance and community with a live 17-piece Stage Band at the Maitland Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 15. Seed Swap at Leu Gardens is 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Orchid Room. The Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club will host a walk in Winter Park on Saturday, Sept. 15. The walk will start at Howell Branch Preserve. Participants can register and start the walk any time between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Each walker will be given a guide with detailed instructions and are welcome to walk with a group, a companion or by themselves. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College is opening “The Mysterious Content of Softness” on Saturday, Sept. 15. The exhibit will display fiber’s connection to the human body and focus on techniques such as knitting, loom weaving and crochet. Nonprofit Cornerstone Hospice will be conducting a two-day volunteer training toward the required certification to become a Hospice Volunteer for anyone who may be able to assist in community and special events, veteran recognition projects, visiting patients, sewing projects, simply keeping a patient company, helping at the office and much more. The Holocaust Center in Maitland will have a reception to mark the opening of its new exhibit, “The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany.” The reception will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, and will feature Dr. Alzo Reddick, the Director of Special Programs and Defense Transition Services at UCF. Special guests will include two local Tuskegee Airmen, Daniel Keel of Clermont and Richard Hall of Maitland. One of the nearly forgotten stories of the Holocaust is the history of African-American GIs. The League of Women Voters of Orange County will host a Meet the Author session at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, with Michael Grunwald, the senior national correspondent with Time magazine. The city of Winter Park and the Public Art Advisory Board have brought back Art on the Green, a prestigious exhibition of large-scale sculptures magnificently displayed in Central Park and on the lawn of City Hall in downtown Winter Park. Art on the Green 2012 will feature the unique and creative works of eight noted sculptors on display during park hours from Sept. 1 to March 1. Exhibition catalogs are available at City Hall and the Winter Park Welcome Center. The collection includes a range of sculptures from elaborate bronze pieces to those fashioned from stainless steel and reclaimed materials. On display at Art on the Green 2012 will be Russell Bellamy’s “St. Prego,” Doug Makemson’s “Ain’t Gonna Work on Maggie’s Farm No More,” Allie Pohl’s “Ideal Woman: Caryatid (Fuchsia),” Dale Rogers’ “Think and Be Free,” Carolina Sardi’s “Three Double Nests,” Chris Scala’s “Airbourne,” Barbara Sorensen’s “Muse I” and Bill Woods “Doorways and Roadways.” A fun, family-friendly opening event celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon, in front of Winter Park City Hall. The Polasek Gardens will host five Tai Chi sessions with instructor Bill Burnette. The sessions will be hosted in the sculpture gardens and are open for beginners and those already practiced in Tai Chi. The classes will be every Saturday in September from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. regardless of weather. The prices for the general public are $50 for the entire series or $10 per session, museum members pay $40 for the series or $8 per session.
