West Morse Boulevard north of the Amtrak station in Winter Park will be closed from 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, until 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, for work on the SunRail project. There will be no overnight work between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. in accordance with city noise ordinances. The work will include the demolition and reconstruction of the rail crossing. The Winter Park Institute at Rollins College will host New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Alfond Sports Center, 1000 Holt Ave. He will discuss human rights violations regarding the oppression of women and girls in the developing world. Kristof co-authored the bestselling book “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” with his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, also a New York Times journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner. Kristof is often called the reporter’s reporter for his human right advocacy and his efforts to give voice to the voiceless. This is a free event, open to the public. No RSVP is necessary. Florida Opera Theatre presents “Opera in the Park,” a Winter Park opera concert series to be held in downtown Winter Park in an intimate setting for exclusive operatic performances at the Winter Park Wedding Chapel, 301 W. The Winter Park Public Library will have its annual fundraiser, Bash for Books, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Winter Park Civic Center. This year’s Bash will feature food, wine, a silent auction and raffles to raise money in support of the programs and services of the library. This year the fundraiser will celebrate “The Great Gatsby,” the acclaimed and infamous book by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club will host a walk in Winter Park on Saturday, Sept. 15. The walk will start at Howell Branch Preserve. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College is opening “The Mysterious Content of Softness” on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Holocaust Center in Maitland will have a reception to mark the opening of its new exhibit, “The Civil Rights Struggle, African-American GIs, and Germany.” The reception will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, and will feature Dr. Alzo Reddick, the Director of Special Programs and Defense Transition Services at UCF. The city of Winter Park and the Public Art Advisory Board have brought back Art on the Green, a prestigious exhibition of large-scale sculptures magnificently displayed in Central Park and on the lawn of City Hall in downtown Winter Park. Art on the Green 2012 will feature the unique and creative works of eight noted sculptors on display during park hours from Sept. 1 to March 1. The collection includes a range of sculptures from elaborate bronze pieces to those fashioned from stainless steel and reclaimed materials. The Polasek Gardens will host five Tai Chi sessions with instructor Bill Burnette. The sessions will be hosted in the sculpture gardens and are open for beginners and those already practiced in Tai Chi.
